Gustav II Adolf was the founder of Tartu University, therefore the monument stands appropriately close to the main University building, in a small, pleasant square, where Tartu citizens like to sit when days are warm. King‘s figure is not imposing or pompous, just very fitting into the surroundings. It being so different from pompous Russian monuments, no wonder that Gustav II Adolf was removed by the Soviets in 1950 and returned to its place only when Estonia became independent, in 1992.

This monument's history reflects very well the history, mentality and friends of Tartu. Gustav Adolf the II was Swdwsh King, who created the University of Tartu in 1632. Monument was created to celebrate the Republic of Estonia 10th anniversary in 1928, destroyed by Soviet Union in 1950; built up from snow by academic men's choir members in 1988 (still soviet era!), restored in 1992 as a copy of Göteborg's Gustav Adolf the II monument, presented to Tartu by Uppsala University.

The statue of the founder of Tartu University. Just a lifesize statue of a swedish king. Nice little park around it though where it is good to sit down for a bit, maybe have a beer or cigarette or whatever rings your bell :)
