In the depths of the countryside near Haapsalu, we stopped for lunch on midsummer's day. My son lives locally so we knew there was no menu as such, and they did not always do food. When we arrived they were busy setting up in the garden for the midsummer celebration, and asked if we had lots of time. We had, so we waited and watch the preparations. The menu was meat and potatoes. We asked if there was anything else and were offered pork or chicken and potatoes. When it arrived it was a full plate of marinated meat, crispy potatoes and carrots with a tasty salad. We drank home made lemonade with rhubarb or berries which was wonderful. we had been told not to ask for pudding in case they were too busy, but it was offered - home made vanilla ice cream. This was a work of art - delicious ice cream, berries and biscuit decorations. They also did coffee. The price was very reasonable and we were extremely happy. The chef came to see how we liked his food and with a little English and a little Estonian we got on very well.
If you are looking for a really Estonian place to eat, this is it. It is also a guest house with maps, brochures and bird books and set in the middle of a nature reserve. It would be a wonderful place for a get away from it all holiday.
