The pedestrianised Hlavna Ulica, the main street, is the place to be in Kosice. A spot I enjoyed for dinner here, was the restaurant 'Republika Vychodu' facing the Gothic St.Elizabeth Cathedral. There are about 10 round tables outside, while indoors the room has a cross-vaulted ceiling (maybe inspired by the church).
Sitting outside with a Slovak 'Kaltenecker 11' pilsner lager, I had the opportunity to study the menu card with not too many, but original dishes. It also gave some information about the name 'Republic of the East' (Republika Vychodu). It made me think, that maybe after the split up of former Czechoslovakia they here were - no doubt jokingly - talking of separating the new Slovakia into a western and eastern part. I had first been given a Slovak menu card, then an English one.
For dinner I sat inside by the window, still having a great view. On both my visits two young friendly waitresses were in charge, with whom I could well communicate in English. My choices for dinner were on the first evening pierogi (dumplings) with a filling of red cabbage, topped by fresh figs and accompanied by duck breast. I enjoyed it, although the 'pierogi' dough was a bit too thick and tough for my taste.
The next evening, happily returning here after the positive experience of my first dinner, I went for 'beef cheeks on mashed potatoes with mushrooms, spinach and thyme', which I also liked.
There was pleasant and not too loud jazz and pop music from the background.
