“Great pools!”
Reviewed 12 March 2012

I stayed for a couple of nights at this hotel in the spring of 2007. I stayed in a single room which was clean and quiet. The breakfast was excellent with a lot of options from different types of omelets to yogurts and fruit juices. Just one of the best breakfast that I have saw in the hotels. The pools are really nice, clean and the access is free for guests. The hotel is situated quite close to the center of the town and also quite close to the Keleti train station. For me it was a nice experience. Nest time in Budapest I will choose this hotel.

The best bufet breakfast I have ever seen in my life is in this hotel! The rooms are comfortable and nice, (the expensiv ones with view are nice at least,) the entrance to the spa is free, it's close to everything. Besides, in spite of being a quite big hotel, it's not a labirynth, you can find everything in it easily.

My first time in Budapest but not a novice traveler. I have had the honor of staying in literaly 100's of hotels in the last 10 years due to my occupation and the Hotel Gellert rooms are in the top 5 worst of all time. There is no doubt you get what you pay for however Hungary is known for being a little less expensive than western Europe. I paid about 65 euros for a room per night and it was very very old fashioned and a single bed with mis-matched furniture. The bathroom shower and facilities were 1950's and have not been updated. Sleep quality is poor and if you get a room in the front of the hotel you will hear all the noise and be woken up.

The service was quite good but the people behind the reception look lost from time to time and one gentleman was not interested in helping at all as I waited for over 5 mins for him to finish counting money in the cash register. The Hotel is a little farther down away from downtown just be careful as it will take a taxi, a tram ride or a long 20-30 min walk to get to some of the major sites.

I ate one of the two days breakfast and it was very average with some bread, fruit, cheap diluted orange juice and cold meat. I also ate in their bistro one evening and it was very average in terms of quality and service not to mention catching two of the staff flurting with each other heavily. I walked around the corner as they were embracing and they got very embarrased.

The best part about this hotel is the free access to the Gellert Thermal baths. That is worth staying for again. I recommend the hot pools (not the swimming pool) and the steam room as it was great after working all day.

All in all it was a very average hotel with little in terms of food to offer as an advantage to Hilton, Marriot or some of the other exceptional hotels that my friends have stayed in. The baths are the main attraction that others do not have.

Room Tip: Take the rooms on the back as the traffic noise on the river facing rooms will wake you in the middl...

One of the reason to go to Budapest was the visit of the Mangaliza Festival, which is an open market for suasages, ham (from the original Hungarian pig race called Mangaliza) and Palinka and a real gourmet treat!!!
Even though we had a room with a view to the central court with a reasonable price everything was perfect. Not the standard furniture and not the standard staff, but high professional, friendly and dedicated people are working in this hotel. I only knew by some stories how to change e table cloth in a professional manner, but here I could witness it! Chapeau also to the management.
Also the breakfast buffet was perfect and of course the bath!
The only small point worth mentionning was the gap shall I call it great cannon betweent the two matrasses of a double bed. This problem was solved by putting two (!) blankets in.

Room Tip: I had a cheaper with no view to the Danube, but worth the money!

Dear Sir,

Let us thank You for having taken time to post a comment on TripAdvisor's website on your recent stay at Danubius Hotel Gellért.
It was very interesting for the management to read that "one of the reason to go to Budapest was the visit of the Mangalica Festival "- yes it is to promote this very healthy food prepared from the mangalica pig meat.
Like You,we all love our unique palinka /aquavit made from fresh fruits / an we agree with you " with the mangalica festival it is a a real gourmet treat "
Many thanks we do apreciate your feedback about our staff ""high professional, friendly and dedicated people are working in this hotel "

Many thanks for giving a "chapeau to the management."
I have also passed your kind comments to our chef and restaurant manager "Also the breakfast buffet was perfect " thank you- "and of course the bath "many thanks.

We were really glad to read that generally you have enjoyed your stay in the Gellért hotel despite as you put it "a gap between the two matrasses of a double bed...,this problem was solved by putting two blankets in ..."

We do hope we will have the chance to welcome you back soon, in The GELLÉRT Hotel ,maybe with a larger room with a nice view overlooking the Danube and without gap....

Kind Regards

I had a short stay in Budapest, and this hotel was good for a short stay. The spa area and the pools were amazing, The location was the best, and the hotel views were beautiful, across the street from the Blue Danube River! The Hotel´s restaurants were excellent, they offered dinner at the sound of Violins... and the prices were very reasonable. However, the rooms are small, need renovations and the furniture is very old and dark. There is a kind of "smell" all over the hotel halls, the rooms and the lobby. I think that they need to open the windows once in a while.

Dear Sir !

Thank you very much for taking time to post your comments on TripAdvisor website about your recent stay in our Danubius Hotel Gellért!
We the management do appreciate even short comments: as you write "I had a short stay in Budapest, and this hotel was good for a short stay. " The location was the best, and the hotel views were beautiful, across the street from the Blue Danube River!
We were glad to read your further comments like :The spa area and the pools were amazing. The hotel's restaurants were excellent, they offered dinner at the sound of Violins..and the prices were very reasonable.
I was sorry to read your review like:the rooms are small, need renovations " yes indeed we do have some smaller rooms not more than 20 %,and in case you asked,we would have changed it immediately, due to our low occupancy in February.
Renovation has long been planned and a total "face lift " had to be postponed by our owners, due to the recession in the real estate market...

Thank you again for your kind comments and we hope we can welcome you back in a much larger room during your next visit!

Kind regards
