This is a perfect hike if you want to get out of Prague for the day and return early enough to do other things. We met with Pavel (our guide) in front of Hlavni Nadrazi at 8.45 AM. We had enough time to purchase our tickets and snacks before heading off to Srbsko. Arriving in Srbsko around 10 AM, Pavel wasted no time in introducing us to the ‘shark in the river’. Then a short walk through the quaint and tiny village, we traipsed into the folds of the Central Bohemian forest that connected to Karlštejn.

Pavel is a knowledgeable guide and showed us various plants and wildlife. He also explained the land formation and is open to any questions one may ask him. We were lucky to witness so many butterflies native to the area. There are also several caves along the way; one was even inhabited by a very startled mouse!

We took a small detour to explore the tiny waterfall in the area; alas it had mostly dried up, a fact we were aware of but still decided to visit anyway. If you do decide to visit this part of the forest, beware that it is slippery in places and when coming downhill, one should maintain a safe distance from the other.

After a short walk up a hill, there is a glade with a covered spring and picnic table – a perfect rest stop. We also spotted some majestic horses and their riders crossing this area. At this point we were about a kilometer away from Karlštejn and another kilometer from Mala and Velka Amerika. The rest of the walk was pleasant and we emerged from the forest into Karlštejn. We then wandered into a fantastic restaurant, Pod Dračí skálou (Under the dragon rock) where I experienced the best roast duck and dumplings! Service was friendly too. At this point our hike was over and one can decide whether to explore Karlštejn or catch the train back to Prague. We opted for the latter and we were back in Prague at around 4 PM.

This trip is for anyone – however, I don’t recommend climbing up the waterfall if you are elderly or have kids. Despite the hike not being strenuous at all, for some reason I passed out early that night!
