“Picturesque ruin of a medieval castle”
Review of Castillo de Zamora

The castle once powerful and important lost its position many centuries ago and, deprived of its military status, served as a prison and a court of justice. By the early 20th century it was apparently useless and it was abandoned. Its current state is the result of a fairly recent reconstruction which aimed, quite successfully, at producing a picturesque ruin. You can enjoy a walk among stone walls and take pictures of the Duero valley and the city below. The castle gardens are used as an open air gallery of modern sculptures.

Nicely paved for visitors, but for wheelchairs only limited accessible. Must have been nice in the past, overlooking the river Duero, but now just some stones.

Basically it's a small castle and being restored and made more accessible with walkways the outstanding feature for me was the huge moat, it looks like it would have made it very difficult to enter unlike some moats you see! It's a nice position by the cathedral and a lovely park.

Really enjoyed our walk around this castle.
Zamora is quiet at this time of the year so were the only visitors at the time.

Luckily the wall and grounds have been restored. Nevertheless there is no much to see in it. They could have added some explanatory panels, with information about its history and role in the town history. It makes for a short walk over the walls, to get some nice views. Considering that it is a free visit, it makes for an short tour once you are in the area.
