Had a sumptuous dinner in this restaurant with authentic Malaysian dishes including chili crab, peppered pork ribs,,,,yum! The seatings are well placed and comfortable. Parking is easy and convenient at the Ashfield Mall car park.

This is a great place for good Singaporean/Malay food. The decor is bright and goes for a street food vibe and the service is friendly. There are certainly some pricey options on the menu (crab etc), however you can still go 'cheap and cheerful' if you want to. We had a rice dish and a flat noodle dish plus a couple of (non-alcoholic) drinks for less that $40.

Kreta Ayer Restaurant can easily be found when you are in Ashfield as it is a walking distant from both Ashfield Station and Ashfield Mall. It is located on Liverpool Rd, a long and busy road in Inner West but you can park your vehicles on both sides of the road and even in Ashfield Mall.
The dining room is quite big, decorated with several fake red windows on the walls. Hard wooden tables and benches are used to match the room design but the benches are not comfortable to sit on for a long time as they have no back support. The room is air conditioned but there is a separate veranda with open glass window and ceiling fans for smokers.
This was not our first visit and every time we have come, there has been no queue. It is only during weekends that this place is busy and crowded.
Several Malaysian restaurants offer limited standard menus but Kreta Ayer has more of a variety. Our order this time consisted of Kreta Ayer fried rice with seafood, Crispy tofu with fish mince, Salted egg and butter prawns, Belacan French beans and Beef black bean with rice noodles.
Overall the dishes were good and had strong flavors and were especially salty and oily. The belacan french beans were also slightly spicy and the prawns had a little taste of sweetness. This type of dish can not be eaten too often because of its typical strong Asian flavor. So coming back after 1-2 months is maybe a good idea!
And remember to bring cash with you when you come because they do not accept cards!

We came here for dinner with friends on a weekend, and had a nice meal that reminded me of Singapore flavours

The restaurant is not too large, and the seating is benches and stools; with a few chairs as well

The menu is more seafood, and less meat; which is a good thing for seafood eaters!

We had the Crispy/Spicy Squid, a grilled Barramundi, some crispy tofu, chilli prawns, and fried rice with seafood. And mussels/pipis/lalas for a $1 (a special deal... :-)

The prawns are served in the shell.. so be prepared to get your fingers dirty.

I'd go back to sample the vegetarian food, and the crabs

This place is a mixed bag, some of the food is quite nice while others are disappointing
This time around people were leaving the door open which meant the cold wind was coming in,we must of gotten up at least 6 times to close the door so we don't freeze
Prices are a little more than expected but the food came out faster than expected
