What service! We misread the web site to think that we could show up on any day for one of the tours and jump in. When we woke up early one Thursday, we drove in to arrive in advance of the Canyoning Waterfall Excursion. They hadn't planned for anyone, but called a guide in and within 20 minutes, we're were geared up and ready to go!
The canyoning tour is fabulous. I can't imagine what the tour would be if you just went to the waterfall to look and came back. We visited El Limon waterfall, and then hiked the river back to town, including jumping off smaller waterfalls, swimming down the river, and sliding down rocks. Once we left the river, it was a 10 or 15 minute hike through residential and farm areas to get back to the restaurant.
What really made it was our FABULOUS guide Andres (I'm sure I misspelled it). He was so friendly and knowledgeable about the river and the town. You could tell he had a great pride in the beauty and history of his community. He had broken English (he's much more proficient in Dutch and French), but we got by fine. He kept checking on us as we traveled through the more treacherous areas ("You okay, lady? Lady, you okay?").
I will say, that the canyoning trip requires a good amount of energy and athleticism. It's a LONG walk down the river, and near then end your legs are really getting tired, which results in some clumsiness. My husband and I both hike, swim and workout, and are generally healthy -- but we found ourselves slipping and tripping, especially near the end. I think this trip is an AMAZING way to see the waterfall, but be sure you have the sure-footing and health to tackle it.
We did purchase the lunch (an additional $8US) after the tour. It was good food, served by a friendly staff. And we had a very nice conversation with Santi himself.
This was one of my favorite parts of our trip to Las Terranas, and I highly recommend it (even with my scratches and bruises!).
