The hotel is in a delightful position with wonderful sea views and slightly away from the 'bustle' of the Funchal traffic. It is set in attractive and well maintained grounds.

The interior, including the public areas and bedrooms are maintained to a high standard. Bedrooms are well appointed with comfortable beds. The competence and cheerful attitude of the staff responsible for everyday care of the rooms is of excellent.

The staff in the restaurant are charming, helpful and very professional. Breakfasts are excellent - the evening meal provided a good choice and although sometimes was not quite to our taste, we never had a poor meal, there was always something that we liked!

Reception staff were courteous and efficient.

Overall, we had a very pleasant and relaxing holiday and always felt that our well-being was paramount to the staff. We are looking forward to our next visit (the third!).

My wife and I have recently returned from a 14 night stay at this Hotel and with out doubt this Hotel has one of the best locations in Funchal
The setting on the promenade with amazing views over to Cabo Girao and Camera de lobos to the West and Funchal harbour to the East are amazing.

Combine this with beautifully manicured landscaped gardens and two gorgeous huge swimming pools make lazy days around the pool area very relaxing and extremely enjoyable indeed!!

The Hotels rooms are very well planned and spacious with a separate shower enclosure rather than having to climb into a bath a fiddle with a messy shower curtain!

The Hotel is set well out of Funchal, but I believe this to be a positive as it is very peaceful and you have options to walk either into Camera de Lobos which is a beautiful fishing village with lots of character ( 40min) or into Funchal via the Lido then through the top road again about 40 mins.

Taxi back from Funchal 7 euro taxi back from Camara de Lobos 10 euro or 2 euro by bus.

I only used the shuttle bus into Funchal on one occasion and to be honest was not that impressed, the full size coach went on a round of stops to other hotels and a 7- 10 min journey took almost 25!!

The amenities that the Grand offers are indeed 5 * however the attention to detail and level of service given is not of the same high status level that the Hotel prides it self on.

I am not saying the service is bad, but do not expect 5* service.

The bar staff and waiters do not appear properly trained and seem very laid back in their approach to carrying out their duties.

My wife and I had cocktails in the bar most evenings and efficiency in ordering, preparation and presentation of drinks was very hit and miss.

Breakfast, which is very good indeed with lots of variety of fresh fruit and breads can be taken on the pool bar decking looking out over the lovely pool area is a great way to start the day, but make sure you ask for HOT coffee or it is luke warm.

We decided to take the Bed and Breakfast option and had some wonderful meals in our stay, special praise to the strangely named " Beef and Wines" but WOW!!! what and experience do not miss a trip to this place.
Try the Picanha, Rump steak cooked over wooden embers on a steel skewer then sliced in front of you is fantastic!!

We tried the Buffet restaurant on one occasion and it was OK but at 28 euro p/p did not represent good value, at this price I expect A la carte service and got this every other night eating out which is very reasonable in Madeira compared to other destinations.

One tip......DO NOT use the room phone to make any external calls, I had to use the phone to make a couple of Restaurant reservations and found on checking out that local calls are charged at 3 euros!!

Overall we had a fantastic holiday, The Grand is a good Hotel and Madeira a wonderful destination with lots of character and the locals are very warm and genuinely friendly people.

Special thanks to Carmina and Manuela on reception for their help!

Don't miss a trip to the Mercado dos Laboradores in the old part of town and a drive or excursion to Curral Des Freiras ( Nuns Valley) you wont be disappointed!!!

Room tip: Side sea view on a higher floor and near to the pool side give amazing views over to Cabo Girao and glorious late sunshine till sunset to the West

Thank you very much for joining us.
We would also like to thank you, for the compliemts towards the location of the Grand itseld and our gardens, which are indeed well kept from our lady gardeners.
We also think that, being a bit out of town, makes us having a quieter location and setting.
We thank you for the feedback regarding our hotel bus, which we will of course take advantage of it tio improve this service in the future. The reason why it makes more stops in other hotels, was for allowing more trips during the day as we did not have it as often as now.
We regret and apologise for the service provided in our bar and will take corrective measures to improve it in the future, as well as finding a solution for having hote coffee every morning to our guests.
We are also updating our evening meals, yet is very difficult for us to compete with local restaurants.
Our telephone calls are more expensive as being in a 5* hotel and works as impulse, next time please be so kind to inform us the restaurants you would like to go and we will be more than happy to book them for your from reception desk, avoiding additional costs.
We thank you for your kind words regarding our team staff, in particular Carmina and Manuela and i will pass the message to them personally.

Hotel was nice. Great pillows and comfy bed. Staff friendly, plenty of fresh choice at breakfast. Probably best to avoid the restaurant overpriced and not great. Try the real cano restaurant just around the corner. Hotel facilities are in a good condition.

When you book a holiday in a five star Hotel you expect a high standard and all round excellence. Rest assured you certainly get this at the Pestana Grand. You would be hard pressed to fault any aspect of this Hotel. ( Perhaps some people could , but my wife and I couldn't ) The entire management, the restaurant maitre'D and really all the Reception and Cleaning Staff are extremely happy to assist you in every way possible and to make your holiday a most enjoyable experience. Nothing is too much trouble. We are thoroughly enjoying our three weeks here and to prove that actions speak louder than words we have booked a further three weeks in November/ December. Oh yes and the food is superb.
By the way I haven't been paid for this article !! John Cornwall

Room tip: At home we live overlooking the sea , so on holiday we must have the same. Any room with a sea view

Hotel staff very friendly and very efficient. Best to have a sea or side sea view room as there is a constant stream of traffic at hotel entrance. Our room was a good size with a large balcony facing west thus able to sun bathe in late afternoon and enjoy the sunsets on our own. The best part of the hotel is the spa facilities only sometimes spoiled by some selfish parents who allowed their children to use it as a play area and ignored the signs indicating that this was an area for peace and relaxation. Only down sides were time wasted by Pestana
Options sales staff trying to sell a form of time share ( if you receive an invite to a free cocktail throw it in the bin, nothing in life is for free) and staff member at pool bar making up her own prices ( be wary if paying in cash). Previous reviews have mentioned lack of free wi-fi throughout hotel, seems to be taking a long time to rectify this.

Room tip: As mentioned best to have a sea or side sea view room.

Thank you very much for staying with us and sharing your opinion about your recent holiday with us.
We would also like to thank you about the compliments towards our staff.
At the Pestana Grand, the majority of the rooms are facing the sea and side sea view however, inland view rooms are also available. We do our best to respect the type of booking re4served in order tp be fair with the guests that have paid for a side or a full sea view, however and in speciial celebrations or occasions, according to hotel availability, we do our best to upgrade the room booked. Our hotel is not located directly at the main road and, in this way we don't think the is much traffic noise.
We totally agree and will continue to try to make the Spa area, a place for relaxation, children are acceptable when together with their parents but, still sometimes is a bit out of our hand.
We apologise and regret the situations you described, both with the free cocktails and at our pool bar and will forward to departments in charge to correct it.
Lastly we hope and believe that, soon the Pestana Grand Hotel will have wifi throughout the hotel and, not only in common areas.
