When you book a holiday cottage in an unfamiliar place, you never know how things will turn out. My wife and I loved our week's stay at Slipway Cottage. It was damned near perfect for us just like the lovely summery weather that met us and stayed for seven beautiful days.
Behind us there was a cow field and in front a view of Garlieston Bay with its wide-ranging tides. One evening I stood on the old harbour wall and watched a grey heron stalking the shallows before striking with his spear-like beak to bring up small silvery fishes.
There is so much history on The Machars and the lanes are so quiet. It was like stepping back in time. One day I went swimming at high tide from Monreith Beach.
The kitchen area of the cottage is pretty good with a washing machine and a nice big fridge freezer but there isn't any cupboard space for one's groceries. We didn't use the outdoor space round the back and it is a shame that the cottage doesn't have a back door to get out there.
The king sized bed upstairs was very comfy and the hot water supply in the bathroom was reliable. A rubber bath mat would have been helpful to avoid potential slipping accidents.
If you have never been to The Machars before, be sure to visit sites associated with St Ninian. His shrine is in Whithorn - accessed through the museum.
Really enjoyed this holiday apartment it is well designed and a well thought out design. I would happily recommend this house to a friend in fact i have suggested my daughter and husband rent it later this year if available . The surrounding area has a lot of nice places to visit .Thanks Betty nice to meet you .
Such a lovely cottage in an amazing location.
Cozy comfortable and well equipped. We made use of the outside space which got the morning sun for breakfast and evening sun too.
The sunsets over the harbour were " best ever" and the local pub was excellent .
We saw lochs ,mountains, stone circles and stunning beaches.
I had never heard of the Mulberry harbour so brushed up my history...what an amazing tale.
We were very sad to leave and hope to be back to this wonderful corner of Scotland.
A big thank you to the great hosts.
Blown away by the peace and tranquillity the place offers. Everything has been provided by Betty and Cliff. They are such good hosts.
Would definitely love to go back for a longer time. Absolutely brilliant place, highly recommended.
We’ve just returned from a wonderful week at Slipway Cottage. It’s such a pretty and well appointed holiday home. The Garlieston coastline is stunning and we had many great dog walks. We hope to return in the near future. Thanks for a lovely stay xx
