di this trip on a very rough day and as a result 3/4 of the passengers were suffering from motion sickness and the staff did a stirling job.
we saw 200-300 dolphins and even stopped the boat to see some albatroses as some of the passengers had expressed an interest in this.
we did the dolphin swim and although it was nice to be in the water with them on this day the water was quite murky and rough and the dolphins didnt seem too intersted in us. it was more fun watching them interact with each other from the boat.
the people at dolphin encounter were proffesional and informative and the tour itself was very slick.

Thank you for your review! Sorry to hear you got a bit sea sick, we do operate on a very exposed area of coastline. Im pleased to read that the sea crew were most accommodating with people feeling unwell. Sounds like you had some good numbers out there that day!
All the best and safe travels, Encounter Kaikoura Crew :)

We loved swimming with the dolphins! It was an amazing experience and we cant say enough positive comments about the staff. They were not only extermely helpful they were so knowledge about the area and the marine life. It was an educational experience and this staff truly appreciates conserving the marine life while ensuring an up close rare opporunity. The dolphins themselves are so playful and we walked away for an appreciation for these animials. Best experience on our New Zealand travels!

Kia Ora!
Thank you for such a lovely review. I shall make sure i show all our staff your appreciation. We do like to give realistic insights to our tours and what to expect. The dolphins are the stars of the show around here, and seem to enjoy their acrobatics, jumps and spins! All the best, Encounter Kaikoura :)

My wife and I are below average swimmers and had to drive four hours out of our way to see this, but it was soooooo worth it! We had between 500-1000 dolphins in the water around us. They came within eight feet of me. Amazing experience! A must do in New Zealand! Take the early trip (5:30 am). Thats when you have the best chance of seeing a ton of dolphins. Bring a change of warm clothes and your swimsuit. They serve hot chocolate and cookies and have blankets on board. Don't miss this one!

The staff are friendly, seem to like what they do, and as a result the tour is a well organized and fun adventure. We went on a slightly windy, overcast morning and there was a moderate sea sickness warning. I've never struggled with sea sickness before, but did a little - I didn't need the bucket, but several others did (so, I would recommend taking the motion sickness pills ~ can't hurt). It was a little difficult to spot a good group to swim with, as the 5:30 a.m. crew had seen an Orca (predator to the Dusky dolphin) - so they were a little more spread out and skittish than they might've been otherwise (wouldn't you be?). But, we got in a full swim at one spot and another shorter swim at another. The dolphins are fast and and incredibly beautiful when they swim and jump around you. I was nervous that the slightly uncomfortable journey back would tarnish the experience, but once back on land, all I could think about was how amazing the dolphins were. Highly recommended!

Kia Ora Sara. Thank you for your review!

Yes Orca do pass through the area every now and again, its usually every few weeks at this time of year. Unfortunately we dont know when or how close to the shore they will appear, they just appear! They can also be choosey with their prey and can make dolphins nervous!
Sorry you got sea sick on the tour, we do operate on a very exposed area of coastline which is prone to sea swells. Glad to read the dolphins kept your mind distracted!

All the best, Encounter Kaikoura.

Great fun watching all the dolphins. Plus we also happened to see some orcas. The crew is very knowledgeable and provide an informative commentary. People who went swimming with the dolphins seemed to have a great time also.

Hi and thanks for the review, glad that our rew were able to share their love and knowledge of our environment here with you! How fabulous that you got to see Orca on your tour too! They are not resident here in Kaikoura, although they do pass through our waters from time to time. It's always a phenomenal suprise and joy for us too when they grace us with their awe inspiring presence! :-)
