The Wanganui River has several attractions and the best we have found is the Paddle Steamer. Which we will do again and take the children.

The river is known by Kiwis as the only river in NZ that flows upside down. Other people have told you about the different things you can do ON the river, but what about beside it? If you go to the southern end of Victoria Ave and turn right, you will be able to keep your eyes open for some interesting art alongside the river. Well worth stopping and taking some photos. You will see the pencils nearer the next bridge (which you will cross if you are heading up the middle of the island).

A road trip along the banks of the Wanganui river will lead you back into history with many places of interest along the way. It's well worth the effort of stopping off at each of these points to gather facts and take in the wonders of the scenery before your eyes. The road is winding and narrow in places with many washouts, however these are being fixed with work crews in many places. The river winds through the hillsides, meanders over wide gravel beds and tumbles through many rapids as you follow it back to Pipiriki. Take a picnic lunch, travel slowly and enjoy!

...nothing really to add to my headline, but the day I was walking along the river side there was a boat tournament and rowing club festival (?) which was fun to see while enjoying the sun.

Recently did the River Trip up in a jet boat and back in a canoe.. it starts from Pipiriki which is a place in the middle of no where but so pleased we decided to do it. A thoroughly enjoyable day, firstly we jetted off up the river, followed by a walk up to 'the bridge to no where' where you stop for lunch, then you walk back, short jet back to the canoes, then you are left to find you way back down the river at your own pace (takes a few hours) and the guide is there to greet you. Don't worry you cant really get lost and it is mostly a nice gentle paddle - being up to you if you have a go at the rapids or not. We actually stayed at the campsite the night before we went, it was very basic, but it was lovely a quiet and very cheap. I would recommend this trip to anyone who likes water and a bit of adventure.
