We stayed here for three nights as part of a Cape to Cape walk. Arriving tired and dirty from the track, we were warmly welcomed by Elaine. We stayed in the main house, and certainly needed to shower before using the beautiful lounge rooms with their lovely white lounges! Our room was very comfortable, if a little small. Bathroom was delightful with beautiful soft towels. Stephen was very obliging and drove us to and from the track each day as requested. A highlight was the meals prepared by Elaine each night. We enjoyed a variety of delicious home cooked meals with other guests as well as Elaine and Stephen. Elaine gave us great advice on the local area. A lovely, peaceful place to stay in beautiful surroundings.

My husband has already penned his review but I want to give my side of it. We stayed in a Garden Suite for 5 nights in April 2012 and at first, being a city girl, I was not used to the silence of the night. Waking up to the views of the beautiful estate was breathtaking. Our kitchenette was very well equipped with a large fridge, freezer, toaster, coffee maker, electric hobs, microwave etc so each morning we made a big breakfast using the local cheeses, organic eggs, fresh breads etc. We sat at our dining table with the incredible view of the countryside, we opened up the patio doors so our whole room was open to the outside, and so the day began! Our Garden Suite had a huge bathroom with sunken bath which was actually a jacuzzi, very large shower and lots of fresh fluffy towels. Elaine was kind enough to leave candles, slippers, bath oils etc
The Garden Suites do not have internet so we visited the main house every day to download our emails and skype the kids. Elaine was always very helpful, she was happy to make recommendations and help us make restaurant bookings, she advised us where to go and even what was good on the menu. In the living room there's a lot of books on the local area plus magazines and a cupboard full of DVD's if you wish to borrow them! Nothing was too much trouble for Elaine, even as we waved farewell on our last day, Steven told us to drop in at the Eagle brewery on our way up to the Lighthouse (which we did and it was excellent). I'm usually someone who likes to discover places by myself but this is one of those times I listened because Elaine obviously knows the area like the back of her hand, she knows so much but she doesn't force it on you, she is sensitive and kind with a heck of a personality.
We would highly recommend Gilgara in every respect, it's only a 10 min drive from the Margaret River town and a short drive to all the main wineries. We found our stay very relaxing and comfortable, we slept the best we've ever slept and we would definitely like to return with our children in the future.

Room Tip: Garden Suites are really good if you like to have your own breakfast and head out for the day. They are big and have everything you need. I didn't see the rooms in the main house but the breakfast lay out looked very good.

The word "retreat" which appears in name of this place is very well placed. It is not a hotel nor an inn - its a retreat thru and thru. This is a wonderful environment to get away from the hustle and bustle and to relax & recharge batteries together with nature.

We were in MR for 5 nights to attend a friends wedding but while here we also wanted to relax, sample some good wines and also have some good food. Our host Elaine was extremely helpful in helping guide us to hit exactly the right notes for a very memorable trip.

The rooms are very spacious, clean and well maintained. The kitchenette was a very nice touch for our morning bfasts with nature as well as some midnight snacks. The large bath saw some good use and helped tremendously toward our goal of relaxation.

I would very highly recommend Gilgara for travellers of all ages who are looking to get away from it all in a very natural setting.

We stayed here 5 nights during Easter and were dissapointed. We read good reviews on booking and tripadvisor but have to write this review to balance things out. I wrote this review on booking.com but they did not put it on the net; I suspect they only place the positive ones. It's pricey, noisy (rodent inside wall who kept us awake and extremely loud fridge) and not hospitable. After the 1st night we tried to find other hotel but everything in town booked for Easter. One of owners said 'out' to my 3 year old when he walked in the main building. This hotel is good for pensioners, but not for families with kids. Owners made me feel guilty for bringing my 2 (well behaved) children. All in all it was a stressfull, tiring and quite expensive stay!

The Gilgara Retreat is a long way from my home in Chicago, but I can't wait to go back! From the moment you turn the corner to drive up to the place, you know you are headed somewhere special. When we checked in, Elaine was incredibly helpful. We only had one night and a full day in Margaret River, and she mapped out a suggested itinerary for us that turned out to be perfect (Prevelly Beach for the sunset, Arc of Iris restaurant for dinner, several great wineries and coffee and chocolate tasting). Our garden villa had a modern, soothing decor with a fabulous spa bath. Eyeshades are thoughtfully provided because some of the high windows are not covered. The bush setting is lovely, and each villa has a small terrace with table and chairs where you can watch kangaroos and other wildlife. We didn't have time to use the kitchenette for anything except making coffee. My only regret is that we didn't have more time to enjoy this very peaceful retreat. It's a very special place!

Room Tip: The rooms in the house look very nice, but the Garden Villas are really special.
