We turned up at 8:30pm without booking and the reception was just closing but they checked us in and had availability for a double room with en suite ($69) room was clean and also a bonus to have our own bathroom! Linen was clean and the room was a nice size with a wardrobe. The bathroom did have quite a few ants in but was no problem for 1 nights stay. We were unsure of checkout time and at 9:30am a guy knocked on our door. I said we would be out soon and he did the same 15 minutes later. At 10am he just came in and started clearing the room with no explanation - This is why it's only average and not good. There was also free parking. We didnt make use of the common areas or kitchen although they looked ok.

Hello Natasha, thank you for your comments and pointing out our cleaners desire to get into rooms and begin cleaning. The cleaner has very high standards but we have had this discussion with him before about giving customers time to actually leave their rooms before he begins cleaning. It is a bit harder for him to do this in the dormitories but in the private rooms he should be able to manage this. We will remind him again. Safe travelling.

The hostel was ok but we found that our car was locked in the car park and we dare not ask for it since it was after 9pm and we would have been charged a fine! This is stated on the bedroom door, but we didnt see it til we wanted to get the car out! The hostel has lots of rules and we were reminded at 9.45am that we had to be out in 15 mins - we were already aware of that - lol. Anyhow it was an ok place to stay - but the least favourite accommodation of our 6 day trip...

Hello Juliet, yes we do provide a locked car park in the evening as many of our guests are looking for this facility. There is a large sign in the car park telling people about the time the car park is locked and opened. There are also signs in rooms giving this information. You did mention that there is a fee when people wake the manager up outside office hours. This is correct. We do this to make it easier for the night manager to get some undisturbed sleep. When people do pay this fee we donate it to the Tasmanian Wilderness Society. Thank you for your comment and safe travelling.

We came from Hobart to Launceston to go to an 8.00 am breakfast.. . As we were going to be late in and early out we didnt want to pay alot for an overnight stay and decided having spoken to the very friendly girl on reception about their reasonable rates. . . that we would book !
We told her that we would be arriving late. . . "Not a problem ! We lock the gates to our car park for your security, so we will wait until you get here before we close them up. " and they did ! Excellent ! . . . Found our very clean room that was warm and cosy because they had turned the heater on to take the chill off for us. . .Excellent.! . . said a big thank you on departure. . . ."Not a problem !" was the reply. . . Will certainly be staying there again next time !

We are glad you enjoyed your stay at Launceston Backpackers. With all late night arrivals during the cold weather we turn the heaters on so your room will be warm when you arrive. Thank you for your review.

I was taken here as part of a tour, probably because the hostel's big enough to accommodation big numbers, and it's easy to drive to and park. The kitchen was big, the TV room was alright, having Coles around the corner was handy. That's fair enough, but with the quality of hostels around the public demands more.

In my 8-bed dorm room there were 2 powerpoints for the whole room which were jammed next to a wall meaning they were unusable for anything bigger than small plugs, which for travellers with international converters is impossible. Basically I had to go to the TV room to charge my computer. The hostel itself is too far to walk to the centre of town, and was too large to have any real atmosphere. Wifi was $3 an hour, but if you used one of the hostel's computers it was $8 an hour! In the days of readily accessible internet that's ridiculous. Also I could be wrong, but the middle-aged lady at reception seemed like she didn't really want to be there.

I also stayed at the Arthouse, which had everything this hostel didn't, was more homely, had lovely cheerful staff, and was 2 minute's walk from arguably Launceston's best museum. Go there instead.

We book tour companies into the rooms they request, we have dorms for three, four, five, six and eight people. We apologize for only two power points being in your room, it is an old building and difficult to rewire. The Mall is a comfortable 10 minute walk. Your point about the computers being $8 an hour is a valid point and one we are trying to rectify. The computers do not belong to us. There is 6 more months to run on the lease agreement then we will buy our own computers and install them at a far cheaper rate. It was this reason we installed the WiFi at $3 an hour.
Thank you for your feed back.

50 of us stayed here 2 nights and the staff were wonderful! The kitchen is big and very well equipped. It is the cleanest hostel I have ever stayed in. The bed linen and blankets were beautiful. The blanket was nicer than the one I have at home! The 2 common rooms were large which was great travelling with a group.
