This town is a good place to stay when visiting Milford Sound. It has a wealth of places to shop in - with prices often much cheaper than for an identical item in Queenstown. Several good places to eat. Lots of activities in town or nearby on the lake as well.

As the gateway to Fiordland Te Anau can appear busy especially in the evening and overnight. During the day it empties out as people head to the Sounds or the Great Walks. We visited Milford Sound and decided to stay an extra day to go the Lake to Lake Cycle trail. So glad we did. Nice day spend on a quiet track enjoying the sights and sounds of Te Anau and Waiau River. In the evening there are lots of great places to eat and atmosphere with visitors from all over the world.

Impressive lake, with gorgeous back drop. Stayed at Radfords on the lake. Impressive accommodation with friendly, knowledgeable staff.
