We joined the tour in Te Anau and were welcomed aboard by our Tour Manager, Graham. It was a rainy day however, Graham’s knowledge of Milford Sound and his great personality ensured we all had a fabulous day out. The bonus of rain meant we experienced beautiful waterfalls along the way.

So hands down I’d say the Milford Sound BBQ Bus was one of the most memorable experiences I’ve ever had.

If you’re traveling alone, with a group of friends, or family - I’d say choose this over any other tours leaving from Queenstown.

You leave Queenstown on a bus with 12 other strangers but return as acquaintances because your driver/guide/chef is a great people person.

Nigel was my driver and cook (yes!) and tour guide and he truly exemplifies the friendly New Zealand spirit.

Not only do you get 1x1 attention but he takes the time out to educate you about the things you’d never have a clue about.

As an American solo traveler this tour had the best balance of spontaneity (we all jumped out of the bus to take a pic of a Kia at the side of the road), punctuality (we were told we would arrive in Milford Sound at 2:30 and we got there at 2:29), along with a fantastic meal (we were told to keep an eye out for a bobcat - look don’t pet!).

If you go to Queenstown book this trip and ask for Nigel.

Give him a big fat tip because he deserves that and more.

Leave feeling like you’ve spent an entire day catered to you!

A cosy little bus that fits 15 passengers seemed like the perfect way to see the Milford Sound and the surrounding scenery, I just wasn't prepared for the six hour bus trip just to get there!

The bus driver Rob gave very interesting commentary and used just the right amount of humour!
Unfortunately, the day we toured, the boat that we were supposed to cruise on was out of order, therefore no barbeque. We instead boarded a large boat and had a smorgasbord lunch instead which was also quite tasty.

The scenery is beautiful but it's a very long day. My tip - make sure you either bring along plenty of snacks, or make sure you purchase some food at the stop at TeAnau, as it will be another 4 hours until you reach the Sound.

We had a full day tour with BBQ bus.
Our tour guide Neigel was very informative and interesting. It was long trip in bus with several stops with beautiful views, then a boat ride in the mikford sound including nice BBQ lunch.
Small nice group of 12 tourists on total

We were so lucky to go on this trip on a beautiful clear day, although I hear its fabulous in the rain as well.

Our tour guide Rob was great, we felt very safe in his hands and definitely recommend doing this tour from queenstown rather than driving yourself as it is a big day.

The drive to the Milford Sound was as enjoyable as the actual boat trip on the sound. Rob stopped off at a few spots on the way, great photo opportunity’s!

The boat was fantastic, the skipper took us right under the waterfalls, just beautiful.

As this is only a small bus it feels so much more personal than the big tour busses.

This is a must do!!
