Owner description: Discover New Zealand’s only Castle, built 1871 by William Larnach, merchant baron and politician, for his beloved first wife Eliza. It took more than 200 workmen three years to build the Castle shell and master European craftsmen spent a further 12 years embellishing the interior. Larnach spared no expense on his dream home, which features the finest materials from around the world. The Castle is still privately owned and cared for by the Barker family who purchased it as their home in 1967. Decades have been spent on the Castle's restoration, with the family having restored empty buildings from ruin and assembled a large collection of original New Zealand period furniture and antiques. Open to the public throughout, this conservation project has been funded through admission fees. The family has always been committed to opening their home and sharing this significant period of Dunedin and New Zealand's history.Scandalous and tragic stories, spectacular tower views and a Garden of International Significance complete this enjoyable award-winning experience. Boutique Lodge accommodation is available in the Castle gardens. Weddings, Balls, Conferences and Celebrations are held in the beautiful 3000 square foot Ballroom. High Tea is also now served daily in the Ballroom at 3pm

Nice place to visit with family and friends. Nice food (but sorry for this) service need improvement specially behind the counter.A guy who served me and my gf was rude and no smile and far away from customer service basics but the girls around the restaurant was good with service. Nice coffee latte and compliment to chef for soup of the day was great.
will be back ;)

Outrageously overpriced $62 for two people to see the tiny castle. $31 to see the ‘gardens’.
The Gardens were a joke. Nothing was that well maintained and you can see the native plants for free elsewhere. Didn’t even look at the cafe - no doubt overpriced.
Have visited many castles and gardens overseas and not had to pay half as much (even with currency conversions and privately owned estates).
Understandable that it’s nz’s only castle and privately owned but it was ridiculous. Do not visit, not worth it at all - save your money and go see the albatrosses instead.

I have previously been to Larnach Castle before as a child and I have to say, it has improved throughly since then. While there was also an issue with my maturity at that age, I remember it used to be boring and slightly dirty and run down looking for it to be represented as “NZ’s only castle”. This was far from what it was like this time. We did an audio tour that goes step by step into each room, telling you about the furniture and the décor, which I found to be exquisite. While there are many stairs with this reducing their market ever so slightly, I’m glad they still have the old spiral staircase and haven’t ripped it out to put an elevator in

a visit to the castle is a must , to hear of all the history of the larnach family and the building of the castle many years ago and the restoration that has taken place over time makes this castle one of dunedins gems .

In a relatively new country it is unusual to be able to see such a testament to the English Victorian ideals of class and wealth .The owners have done a grand job of restoring this magnificient old grand house and wonderfull gardens.
