Arriving in Christchurch @ midnight is not the way to get to love a hotel. Outside the airport in the drizzle trying to find the shuttle, it was cold and damp and - hey there it was, and literally 30 seconds later there was the hotel. It was almost closer than the shuttle. Reception, for a service offered after midnight, was quick and efficient. It was a longish walk to our rooms, but then the Sudima in a earthquake zone and tall buildings are not recommended. The good sized room was a bit over heated and finding the thermostat was beyond me, I opened the window a fraction. TV - old type 4:3 CRT unit - and typical of most hotels we stayed in in NZ. Sleep quality? - very good. Good bathroom, if a little old fashioned. A real positive - absolutely no noise, and being 350 metres from the airport I found that surprising. Breakfast was typical of any reasonable hotel, the food was good, plentiful, hot and well flavoured. The good news was the coffee was the same.

As airport hotels go, this place was a gem. Friendly helpful service, really nice vibe with a bit of a buzz, ordinary decor but clean & roomy and great food at the restaurant. The courtyard and was a sunny spot to relax and the shuttle on demand at 4am was the icing on the cake.

The hotel has one excellent point and one main drawback. The positive is that it is the closest hotel to the airport – just 350 metres walk to the departure area or a short, free shuttle bus ride, available 24 hours. This proximity is invaluable when you have, as we did, a 6am flight. The drawback was the $10 minimum charge to wifi access for 24 hours. Having had free wifi throughout our two weeks in the South island in all the motels and B&Bs, this was an unpleasant surprise. Maybe they are catering for businessmen with expense accounts. The hotel is otherwise satisfactory. It is clean, warm, sufficient space; all that is needed for an overnight stay near an airport. An ice tray I provided in the frig but no attempt to provide ice! It sits empty on the bottom shelf. Ice for our drinks would have been welcome. We requested the sound proof rooms, more expensive but worth it as we were not disturbed by other guest’ noise. Don’t expect anything of interest nearby from an airport hotel yet this one has the Antarctic Centre almost next door.

Room Tip: Pay extra for sound proofed rooms

The Sudima hotel is right at Christchurch Airport and ideal for those with an early flight. The broom seemed very small compared to the regional motels with their kitchens and dining tables etc but this is a hotel. The service was as expected of the highest standard and room spotless and fully serviced daily. Our every need was attended to including the 3.45am shuttle to the airport terminal. The public transport bus stop is right outside the hotel and the fare a reasonable $3.20 each way. One minor complaint and I mean minor is the A/C was a bit noisy when the fan kicked in and as with most similar places they are noisy with other guests tooing and froing

This place isn't great but it isn't bad. The front of house is smart and modern but some of bedrooms are a little tired and in need of some modernisation. For example in my roon the bathroon taps were so stiff they were difficult to operate and you couldnt fill the kettle from any of the taps. The TV was an old cathode ray tube model as well.

The staff are friendly and helpful.

If you are staying avoid room 749. It is a the junction of three corridors and as a comsequence people gather outside your bedroom. This wouldn't normally be an issue but the walls are thin and noise travles easily. I could hear the people talking next door and could actually make out thye were saying. This could because it was an adjoining room but even so not good in this day an age.

Room Tip: Dont accept room 749
