Make sure you book as they’re very busy on weekends, outside is OK on warmer days. Food quality is good with their winery outlet in the same building, can be noisy with the construction of the building but overall very good.

Wairau River Wines is a great winery to choose for four reasons. Its pretty, the food is delicious, the wines are superb and really well priced compared to others and best of all its family owned not one of the big conglomerates. The menu is quite small but nicely varied and there is a petanque court in the garden for a relaxing game after lunch. Try the Rose its fabulous and great for summer.

Great wine tasting - if you order food they give you the full wine tasting, plus extra wines that will go particularly well with your meal.

The beef rib was so good - somehow the asian/fusion style works perfectly!

Lunch here was just exceptional. As a couple we shared a pate starter. My partner had the beef and I had the blue cheese souffle. All food was lovely and served with very appropriate sides. The salad with the soufflé was amazing. The only negatives we had was the bok choy served with the beef was a little stringy and one of the staff, the host, was very hard, stressed and unfriendly.

My wife and I always time our trip from Nelson to coincide with lunchtime at this restaurant, even ordering ahead so we can catch the ferry.
We, for the last 10 years or so have both ordered the double baked blue cheese soufflé with pear, rocket and walnut salad.
They do it the best. We have tried elsewhere.
I, for the first time, decided to be adventurous. I choose the Coconut braised beef rib with bok choy, rice, sweet choy, smoked chilli & lime kung pao dressing.
We both agreed it was the winner. Sublime.
