I would not recommend this hotel to anyone simply because of the waiting and bar staff.

You get what you pay for at this location. The room was clean and compact. The bathroom small but again clean. Daily room cleaning was offered but staff should remember to pull the sheets smooth and not just tuck in the duvet. The soap dispenser in the shower looked fine but was impossible to get any soap out of. Small issues but can be easily fixed.

However the main issue is the staff. They seriously need to be reminded that they are working in a service industry. They all need to smile and acknowledge the guests.
The appearance of some staff was similar to a badly run building site. Uniforms looked scruffy and ill fitting.
The front staff that we dealt with, although pleasant had no local knowledge and proceeded to tell us they had only been in the country for a year. An even bigger reason to familiarize yourself with events and local information. Especially as the majority of the guests like us were in Wellington for WOW.

The wait staff on the other hand were just simply rubbish. We ate breakfast on both of the days we were there, the tables were left in a mess, guests were moving dirty plates about so that they could eat. Staff were asked to clear tables but didn't seem too keen to do this. We would have liked to order a nice coffee but staff were very hard to locate at times and always appeared to be busy doing nothing.

The worst area however was in the house bar. Both evenings we decided to have several drinks to end the night. The first evening the surly girl ignored us initially and then reluctantly served us glasses of wine. The second evening as we arrived the even more surly male bar tender made us wait some time whilst he dithered about with some coffees. It wasn't the wait so much as the fact that he ignored our presence and when he finally helped us he quickly informed us that it was last orders. Seriously there were over 10 people drinking in the bar, all had been out and like us were just enjoying a night cap. He obviously wanted to get home as he turned off the lights and huffed and puffed while waiting for all of us to finish our drinks.
The bar is soulless and made even worse by a large screen tv blaring out sport. Maybe if the staff read their customers a little better they may have turned off the tv and put on some music,. It was pretty obvious that the sport was on for the staff rather than the guests.
For a hotel that looks like it has just had a refurb it has let itself down by poor training of its staff. If a manager had been present I would have happily alerted him/her to the staffing issues that we encountered. A real shame as this hotel is in a good central location.

Room Tip: Book in somewhere else

Why I chose this hotel, is because this was the cheapest hotel I could find within the CBD. Also it has its own car park, but in saying that its limited and first com first serve and it cost $30 per day, which is expensive to say the least.
What I like best is the location. Shops, cafes, bars and restaurants are just outside your doorstep. 15 mins walking distance to TSB Arena, foreshore, etc.
What I do not like about this hotel is the room which is very small, not big enough for 2 people. There is no insulation, you can hear people having a shower, flushing toilets and people talking in the corridor. Bed is soft and pillows were too high that both my husband and I woke up with sore necks!
Complimentary breakfast is a joke which consist of breads, cakes and muffins! Oh, I better not forget to mention tea, coffee and juice.
I would not recommend this hotel to my family and friends..

Stayed two nights in a King room. The room is not much bigger than the bed. Very tight to get around, not much space for your luggage. The bathroom is compact but functional. Not sure if it is because of the old wooden building but it is extremely noisy, we were on the first floor and the noises, especially in the morning were annoying. Constant thumping from above and around didn't make the best sleep.
The hotel itself is in a great location, at the top end of Cuba street, some great restaurants around and walking distance to the Mall, Harbour and Lambton Quay.

We stayed here with 5 others for WOW. The location was so central and although the rooms are quite small they were fine for us. Affordable and had twin beds. There was no fridge to cool our wine though. We enjoyed dining in the restaurant downstairs. It was deaf friendly with sign language on the menu and the walls which we loved.

Wonderful value hotel in a fantastic location. Very efficient and friendly staff. The hotel has a really relaxed feel about it and is situated in a great spot, being the centre of Cuba street. Nice to have access to the Quality hotel pool and gym. Loved the express breakfast that comes with the room booking.
