I would not recommend this hotel to anyone simply because of the waiting and bar staff.
You get what you pay for at this location. The room was clean and compact. The bathroom small but again clean. Daily room cleaning was offered but staff should remember to pull the sheets smooth and not just tuck in the duvet. The soap dispenser in the shower looked fine but was impossible to get any soap out of. Small issues but can be easily fixed.
However the main issue is the staff. They seriously need to be reminded that they are working in a service industry. They all need to smile and acknowledge the guests.
The appearance of some staff was similar to a badly run building site. Uniforms looked scruffy and ill fitting.
The front staff that we dealt with, although pleasant had no local knowledge and proceeded to tell us they had only been in the country for a year. An even bigger reason to familiarize yourself with events and local information. Especially as the majority of the guests like us were in Wellington for WOW.
The wait staff on the other hand were just simply rubbish. We ate breakfast on both of the days we were there, the tables were left in a mess, guests were moving dirty plates about so that they could eat. Staff were asked to clear tables but didn't seem too keen to do this. We would have liked to order a nice coffee but staff were very hard to locate at times and always appeared to be busy doing nothing.
The worst area however was in the house bar. Both evenings we decided to have several drinks to end the night. The first evening the surly girl ignored us initially and then reluctantly served us glasses of wine. The second evening as we arrived the even more surly male bar tender made us wait some time whilst he dithered about with some coffees. It wasn't the wait so much as the fact that he ignored our presence and when he finally helped us he quickly informed us that it was last orders. Seriously there were over 10 people drinking in the bar, all had been out and like us were just enjoying a night cap. He obviously wanted to get home as he turned off the lights and huffed and puffed while waiting for all of us to finish our drinks.
The bar is soulless and made even worse by a large screen tv blaring out sport. Maybe if the staff read their customers a little better they may have turned off the tv and put on some music,. It was pretty obvious that the sport was on for the staff rather than the guests.
For a hotel that looks like it has just had a refurb it has let itself down by poor training of its staff. If a manager had been present I would have happily alerted him/her to the staffing issues that we encountered. A real shame as this hotel is in a good central location.
