Owner description: ZEALANDIA is a heaven of tropical bliss right on the doorstep of Wellington City. Affectionately referred to as a hidden gem ZEALANDIA received international acclaim for the groundbreaking predator free 8.6km fence. Since the completion of the fence in 1999 ZEALANDIA has brought a number of native birds, reptiles and wildlife back from the brink of extinction where they now roam freely through the 225 hectare valley. A visit to ZEALANDIA is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and a must for anyone visiting Wellington. There are a number treks to saunter, suitable for any fitness level. Alternatively step back in time with our interactive exhibition center or take a load off at the atmospheric Rata Café.

This sanctuary is trying to restore a little bit of New Zealand back to how it was before man messed it up. What I found fascinating was that such a few people could make such a mess in such a short time

We did a tour that was supposed to go for two hours, however, wasn’t going to end until 1pm (3 hours) so if you want to get your moneys worth, don’t have anything straight after the tour like we did and had to cut the tour short. Was very interesting learning about all the birds and wildlife but I felt as though it could have easily just been done by yourself, as there are many placards telling you of the animals, and you get to do it in your own time too. Highlight of the visit was seeing the Takahe and Saddlebacks, and made the visit worth it. Would recommend the tour to bird enthusiasts and nature lovers but would advise families to do it on their own

We went here with limited expectations but came away completely impressed and had a fab time. Our recommendation is to take the guided tour - our guide don was excellent - fully dedicated and full of useful information and facts. All other staff were great and the facilities were also good - we had a lovely lunch
For us this was the highlight of our time in wellington
