“Beautifully done and a wonderful cultural experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 November 2011

This one has it all, a guided walk around a geothermal park with a fun and friendly guide to answer questions and give his amazing local knowledge. A maori cultural story entwined in the walk so you get to learn lots while walking around. Finished with a lovely traditional Hangi (meal) and show with songs, music and dancing. An unforgettable experience.

“Lovely introduction to Maori culture !”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 November 2011

I chose this village for our cultural experience mainly because of its smaller size and away from the more commercialised villages. Our guide ‘Mr T’ (easier version of his traditional name) was both extremely educational and passionate about his Maori heritage but also was most entertaining with his sense of humour. The singing and dances was fantastic so was the food.

Don’t expect to see the hangi being cooked etc, as this is not what the tour is about …its about learning about the Maori culture and touring around their terraced silica park of which they are passionate in returning back to its natural glory after being devastated by the introduction of a massive Geothermal Power Station nearby that starved the natural reserve from its natural resources.

Yes, this is an orchestrated show/tour, however the genuine passion for maintaining tradition and strong emphasis of ‘family’ makes this tour believable enough to pass through the fact that this is still a commercial venture. The singing and stories are truly exquisite and worth the visit and money! Complimentary bus pickup and dropoff in the Lake Taupo region allows one to have a couple of drinks during dinner - which is a bonus!!

“Enjoyable, fun and friendly.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 October 2011

We have just returned from the Maori Cultural Experience and had a great time. Mr Te and his family provided superb hospitality and a wonderful insight into the Maori way of life. The most impressive thing was the enthusiasm and passion that was put into every aspect of the evening. The tour, food and entertainment were a delight. If you are anywhere near Taupo you must go. If you are not near by, get in the car and get near by.

“Spectacular scenery and fascinating insight into Maori culture”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 October 2011

Beautiful Lake Taupo is one of the most spectacular attractions of the North Island of New Zealand. One of the lesser known gems of the Taupo region are the Wairakei Terraces that were shaped by geothermal activity and now offer spectacular scenery and a fascinating Maori cultural experience that provides tourists with an insight into Maori heritage, lifestyle, customs and ritual. The day tours of Wairakei Terraces promise: "..a leisurely one hour guided or self governed tour of the Wairakei Terraces Walkway..features include the ‘Te Kiri o Hinekai’ Stream and (Honeymoon) Pool, famous for its therapeutic and healing powers, a soothing footbath, blue alum pools, red mud pools, geyser, animal park and carving house (Whare Whakairo), featuring carvers at work." My wife and I elected to take the night tour of the terraces, persuaded by the promise: "Experience also an evening of Maori Culture. Beginning with a traditional Welcome (Powhiri) and awe inspiring Challenge (Wero), Speeches (Whai Korero) and Song (Waiata). A tour is then conducted of the Wairakei Terraces and living Maori Village featuring carvers, weavers, tattooists and musicians. The evening concludes with a traditional ground cooked Meal (Hangi) and a concert of Song, Dance and Haka." The evening experience was fascinating but we both wished that our itinerary permitted us to return in daylight to see features that at night were largely concealed by volcanic steam. The Wairakei Terraces are located only 5 minutes drive north of Taupo on Highway 5, and no visit to Taupo would be complete without a visit to this spectacular showcase of Maori culture.
