Description: Located in Taranaki’s beautiful Port area, serving food crafted with love. Bach on Breakwater first opened its doors in 2006 & is situated at the end of the Coastal Walkway, right on the waterfront at the Lee Breakwater in Taranaki’s Port area. It overlooks a child-friendly little beach, and the working shipping harbour. The Bach is warm and casual, with a comfortable and welcoming ambience generated by the purple interior, the use of many upcycled materials and the mix of very old wharf timbers. With cosy banquette seating behind the fireplace, and slab timber tables lining the extensive double-glazed windows, the atmosphere is vibrant, friendly and fun, with terrific sea views. Diners can enjoy breakfast, brunch, lunch and snacks, choosing either from the delicious array of cabinet food, or the extensive and well thought out menu which includes outstanding gluten free, vegetarian and vegan offerings, as well as the normal meatatarian choices. You can be on a diet and still enjoy

I often go here with friends. Good choices, great views of the sea - casual but not good for those in a hurry - people tend to sit over a coffee! Gluten Free - no problem. Very helpful.

Family brunch. Plenty of variety and the food was yum. Caters well for vegetarians etc. good location on the waterfront with plenty of seating inside or out.

We went here for my birthday brunch (free $25 worth for me which is a nice gesture). It was a late breakfast, I had the seafood chowder, which was nice but could have been a bigger portion, my husband had mushrooms on toast, disappointingly just standard bread not homemade. His was generous with excellent bacon. We had a coffee each, not hot unfortunately, and finished with a piece of carrot cake each, a good sized portion, well presented but more of a fruit cake and a bit dry and old. I felt it was quite ordinary food and the birthday free $25 worth made it good value for money, wouldnt go back without the birthday gift incentive though.

We have visited this Cafe before and found to be good venue to eat and to bring people to when we visit from Auckland. After this very disappointing experience we will not be returning or recommending it to others. I will now detail the disappointing elements : Firstly the coffee was very mediocre, my wife's was weak and not hot and mine which was meant to be a triple shot latte lacked substance : My big breakfast was mean spirited in all respects and very expensive, definitely very poor value for money( uninspiring, plain meagre portions with food that lacked imagination). With some modest takeaway items our bill came to an exorbitant 90 plus dollars. Definitely very poor value for money. Disgruntled and definitely not returning customer.

Full marks for actually having vegan options on the menu. I had the vegan brekky, which on the website is advertised for $20.50 but is actually $24.50 - you need to update your website. It includes two rosemary and sage sausages, vege hash cake, baked beans, grilled half a tomato, spinach, crunchy smoky crisps and toast
with olivani and tomato relish. It was just okay - lacked any real flavour and the 'crunchy smoky crisps' to be honest were pretty awful. The baked beans were made on site and were quite good but again lacked any flavour. Apart from my disappointing meal - the restaurant setting is perfect, set right on the harbour with great views. This place has heaps of character, quite quirky. One other gripe, the website says $20 off for the vegetarian or gluten free meal if four of you are dining - but you have to print the voucher and take that with you to claim this - that is stupid, who prints anything these days? I will be back but I just hope the vegan brekky gets a makeover to give it some decent taste.
