The Langham is a five star hotel situated perfectly right on the banks of the Yarra River, with a pedestrian bridge across the river (full of lovers' padlocks) right out the door. Staff was very courteous and helpful, and our room was comfortable with a spectacular view of the river. The bed was a little soft for my liking, but that's a matter of taste. There was a separate tub and shower in the spacious bathroom. There is a lobby business center with internet available--the desk gives you a password good for 15 minutes (get multiple passwords). The air conditioning works well. The Melba Restaurant in the hotel features buffet or a la carte. The pool is great for lap swimming.

Room tip: Ask for a room overlooking the Yarra River.

My partner and I were really looking forward to getting away for easter, especially since it was my birthday. Unfortunately the room we were appointed had a broken thermostat. It took 6 complaints, 4 technician visits and two frozen cold nights before they got our room to a comfortable level. The most disappointing part was the customer service (or lack there of). We were promised a room change on the second night and we waited around in the hotel until 5 PM and no one contacted us. Since it was our last evening and my birthday, we just wanted to enjoy the remainder of our stay. Upon check out we tried to speak to the manager who abruptly pushed us onto the reception staff who "promised to do an internal investigation and would get back to us shortly". It has been 5 days and we are yet to hear from Langham, but taking from the charged credit card I am assuming they once again did not do as they promised. Why am I not surprised? Don't stay here if you are after adequate customer service. This is shameful behaviour for what is supposed to be a 5-star luxury hotel. What a joke!

Room tip: Avoid at all costs

The hotel is fabulous, absolutely wonderful. The staff, especially alvira at the front desk were brilliant. I was waiting in the queue to check-in and staff came to take my bags to ease my weight. Everyone was fantastic. The front doorman was also lovely. Hotel is beautiful- from the rooms to the spa.

2 small things that could be improved. Free wifi only comes with the more expensive rooms. But even the basic rooms aren't cheap- for a 5star hotel you'd expect all rooms to have wifi so this is a negative.

Also, I was shocked to see that room service comes with a $8 delivery charge!!!!!! I wanted to order something for $7 but didn't bother due the charge. Never seen this before.

Thank you for taking the time offer us your valuable feedback following your recent stay at The Langham Melbourne. We certainly appreciate your detailed comments. I am pleased that you found the Hotel with the classic elegant décor inviting and found your guestroom comfortable. The $7.00 delivery fee that is included with a guest’s In Room Dining meal is applied in order that we are able to provide your meal similarly to that you would expect in a restaurant, which includes fine linen, crockery and glassware, with table service executed by our trained wait staff. Upgrade of facilities in the hotel is a continuous process; we have recently completed refurbishment of our guestrooms. I would also like to advise that complimentary standard internet is available to any guest that registers to join our free 1865 Loyalty Programme, which we offer at check in. Many guests take us up on this special offer if they have not already purchased an accommodation package which includes internet access. We hope we will welcome you back again in the future.

My husband & I stayed in a Langham Club room from 28th February to 6th March.

The hotel is very impressive from the outside & even more so in the entrance & lobby. We felt as though this was a very luxurious hotel & the staff were mainly very helpful & friendly, especially the guys out the front ordering taxis & dealing with difficult customers!

As we were paying for a Club room we were dealt with very quickly & efficiently.

Our room was very nice & had a gorgeous view of the City. The only downside is the lack of drawer space! For some reason the hotels seem to think you don't have much luggage & therefore we had to live out of our suitcases for part of the holiday. Not ideal as our clothes got very creased. The king size bed was very comfortable.

The Club lounge was very comfortable again with lovely views. I found however that the breakfast was quite limited in choice, compared to other Club lounges we had used in other hotels throughout the World. I actually was ok as I tend to have a Continental breakfast but my husband got fed up with scrambled egg every day!

The Club doesn't actually give you much more than not having it. There were canapes from 6 pm but again very limited in choice, & which I couldn't eat at all, so just had a glass of wine each night or a cocktail if they were offering them. The staff were very helpful & friendly in the Club lounge.

Computers were free to use in the Club lounge but were antiquated & often could not connect to the internet. I actually could only get an internet connection on my iPhone in the Club Lounge & nowhere else in Melbourne at all!

I used the Spa which was very good & relaxing having a hot stone massage & Indian head massage. Pretty expensive but expected as most Spa's are wherever you stay.

The pool was an inside heated pool not ideal when the sun was beating down & it was over 80 degrees! There was also a Jacuzzi which was really too hot to sit in. Lovely I would think in the Winter but not in Summer! There were plenty of sun beds on the roof near the pool with plentiful towels.

We decided to eat in The Melba restaurant one evening as we had been up before dawn to do a Balloon ride. We were very disappointed in this restaurant. A lot of the food was cold & not very appetising. I had a roast dinner where I actually only ate one potato & one piece of meat. All of this for £50-£60 per person. We did complain & got $25 per person taken off the bill but felt this was not really adequate for a 5 star hotel.

It was my 50th birthday whilst staying at The Langham & the hotel made my day feel special after arranging for a huge bouquet of flowers, champagne & strawberries & chocolate for me. I know my husband arranged it but, after celebrating many birthday's abroad, The Langham was the best.

The only other downer I have on the hotel is that the Aria Bar & Lounge was dirty with food all over the floor. Admittedly a family had left it like that but the staff didn't clean up the mess which really put us off having a drink there.

I would recommend this hotel.

Room tip: A higher floor for the best views.
