Given how remote Coober Pedy is, this is a pretty remarkable hotel. There are above-ground rooms but the whole point of the place is to stay in one of the underground ones hewn out of the colourful rock. They are large and very comfortable, not the least claustrophobic, and incredibly quiet and dark (no windows). The bathroom was a little tired and in need of a spruce-up however.
Umberto's restaurant, at the top of the long flight of stairs, has excellent food and service for an outback town, with a good selection of dishes. Underneath it all is a network of tunnels with information about opal mining - well worth a look.More
