“Great first experience of the Whitsundays!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 March 2012

We stayed at whitsunday apartments last month. Certainly great value for money. The staff were most friendly and helpful, especially Sam. It always makes a trip worthwhile. We enjoyed every minute of our time on the island. It was a shame the rainy weather in the last few days of our stay meant we could not do some activities, but was only a small shame. Would definitely like to return again one day, and mark off the list some of the things we did not get a chance to do!!

Tara & Jo's Front Desk Welcome & Help throughout my stay was such a pleasure, they really went out of their way to help!
The fully furnished apartments were just as good as and in some ways better than home.
Location was perfect being closest to the beach, amenities & pools. The need to hire a buggy wasn't necessary with everything in walking distance.
The best and cheapest coffee was located in the backyard of the Apartments.
Easy check-in and check-out arrangements.
Thank you Tara for being so delightful, welcoming us and making our trip so enjoyable. You were such a pleasure to speak to.

The only criticism I do have is Hamilton Island as a whole can be a tad expensive, therefore order Coles online to ensure foodstuffs are there for your arrival. Cigarettes $24!!

Lots of small things can be improved, such as the broken fly screen, not so clean sofa, etc. But the stunning view of the ocean and islands from the lounge is unbeatable, I just love it. Got a really good rate from one of those group purchase deals, so it's good value for what I paid.

If you have young kids like I do, the location of this apartments is very handy. Just walk out of the hotel, cross a road and walk some steps down to the beach, there is a lovely kids pool next to the ocean. There is also an outdoor spa on site and it's perfectly located on your way back from the kids' pool so you can enjoy a nice spa before going back to your room.

Room Tip: Worth paying extra for ocean view rooms, the view is truly stunning.

We stayed for 6 nights during January 2012, in an Ocean View room on level 6 (West tower). Our apartment was clean and well maintained for the most part, though evidently this level in the West tower hasn't yet had the benefit of the renovation mentioned in some other reviews, as the kitchen and bathroom fittings and furniture were dated and a little worn, but perfectly comfortable, and for the price (we paid $799 for 5 nights plus $250 for the additional night through Groupon, so $175/night) we were happy with the facilities and the view, and we had no hassles with the booking.

We found the airport transfers seamless. The bus which picks you up from the airport didn't seem to have Whitsunday Apartments signage, but all the buses depart from the same place so it was easy to find by asking. Check-in and out were both smooth and efficient. We were each issued with a room key on a Whitsunday Apartments lanyard which was handy as you could keep it with you even in the water, though unlike some other accommodation it is not possible to charge things to your room at island shops and restaurants by showing your key.

One big complaint from me - the room temperature (too cold!). This was because the air con *has* to remain on constantly to avoid mould build-up due to the humidity. We turned the thermostat up but I was shivering each time we came inside, and I had to put on extra clothes at night to be able to sleep. Not what I expected on a tropical holiday. However, my (Scandinavian) husband thought it was perfect!

Room servicing is available at extra cost but we didn't take this up (and didn't miss it) so can't comment. Fresh pool towels are available on request from Reception - you pay a deposit then just swap your old towel for a fresh one.

We ordered food and drink online from Coles on the recommendation of previous reviewers. The friendly, efficient Reception staff (forewarned by us) took delivery and had it transferred to our apartment while we were out, ready for us to unpack. We also ordered mud crabs and bugs from Whitsunday Provisioning, which they packed with ice in polystyrene coolers for us to collect from the marina in our buggy. The most fun I've had grocery shopping in a while :) Both were trouble-free and (in our opinion) provide more choice, better prices, and with less effort than the island stores. We also heard you can also order fresh seafood from Fish d'Vine in Airlie Beach, for pick up from the marina, but didn't need to try them.

The kitchen facilities are adequate for simple meals with all the basics are provided although utensils and cookware are not great quality, which brings me to my other complaint i.e., is the lack of a sharp knife (there was a cook's knife but it was very blunt), and no bread knife, or kitchen shears. A tea pot, coffee plunger and paper towels would also be nice. To be fair, we did not tell Reception about these problems. Had we done so, they may have been able to fix them.

We tried all the inexpensive food places during our stay - the tavern (average), fish and chips from Popeye's (OK), pizza from Manta Ray (average) but the only place we returned to enthusiastically was Sails. Unpretentious bistro food, simply prepared, generous but not ridiculous portions, good value and very good service. We especially appreciated the way their hard working assistant manager (who was on duty when we left at midnight and again at breakfast) unhesitatingly let us order dinner a teeny bit after the kitchen closing time, rather than turning us away hungry. Recommended.

I also enjoyed a couple of fresh vege juices at the Marina Deli, but not the 18 minute wait for one take away juice order. They appeared to be training new staff though. You should also try the ice cream place at least once, even if you're not a fan of sweet things - they make real ice coffee - mmmm.

But our biggest find was what we came to call the "fish hole" at Catseye Beach - a small deep spot in the sea, near the second white buoy in front of the apartment building, where you can find the most amazing fish at low tide (check out my photos for the location). Apparently the resort staff feed them, so that they congregate in the same spot - and we found it! The beach appears pretty uninteresting and weed -infested at first glance but we saw tiny, almost transparent crabs, a beautiful iridescent 10 cm baby squid that checked us out as much as we did him, and finger-sized gobies that pop out of holes among the weed, small blue-spotted lagoon rays in the sandy areas, clouds of fish - some quite large, soft corals, and turtles. You just need to look beneath the surface. We hired snorkel gear from H2OSportz near the marina. We saw small jellyfish in the water too but stinger suits were not necessary.

Pros
- Magnificent view from the balcony - you could gaze at it all day and night if there weren't so many other fun things to do!
- Snorkelling at low tide in front of the apartment
- Efficient, always-smiling reception staff (a wonder, considering the volume of inquiries and requests they seem to deal with daily).

Cons:
- The aircon having to be on constantly (only an issue if you prefer a warmer temperature). The unit is pretty quiet compared to some, but there is warm exhaust air and fan noise from it on the balcony (irritating if you're close to it)
- Poor quality kitchen utensils (only an issue if you are self-catering)

Tips:

- To see sea life without travelling too far, take advantage of local knowledge the Beach Kiosk staff (the hut on the beach at the far left hand end, where you "hire" the catamarans etc). They offer mini tours such as the "turtle Hunt" timed when the tide and currents are exactly right, so you're pretty much guaranteed to see turtles, but if you ask them they may also give you the lowdown on where to see fish and other critters by yourself.

- A small neoprene pouch or wallet is handy to hold your cash/card so you can take it into the water (specially if you're planning to visit the pool bars. Pool bars are obviously why they make Australian money waterproof!)

- If you're planning to order from Coles and you would like to take delivery on a certain day, allow several days between placing your order and the delivery date. We left it till a few days before arriving and had to wait.

- If it fits your budget, hire a buggy for at least 1 day - it's really fun, they seat 4, and certainly give you a different experience.

We absolutley loved our stay here - the apartments are a great option especially when travelling with the family and trying to keep the cost down. Coles online delivered our groceries the day we arrived allowing us to spend that little bit extra on activities as opposed to food. The apartments were very spacious and clean with an amazing balcony overlooking Catseye Beach. We would recommend the Whitsunday APartments to anyone looking at travelling to Hamilton Island. The staff made our stay even more enjoyable with their willingness to assist no matter how silly our questions may have been. Thank you everyone - we will be back!
