My wife and I were told about Jimmy Rum’s by our tour guide as the place in Port Douglas for cocktails. She was so right!!

We had a couple of cocktails before heading to dinner and found the menu to be very comprehensive and the staff very knowledgeable. I was unsure what to have but after a conversation with one of the mixologists I settled on an Old Cuban which was delicious.

We’d recommend Jimmy Rum’s as a must-stop part of your evening whether it’s before or after dinner. The relaxed atmosphere and comfy couches are a great way to while away an evening. I also loved the flamingo straws!

Jimmy Rums is a cocktail bar that opens at 5pm. For 13 years my go to bar had been Zinc, but it is still closed for renovation.

The owners of Jimmy Rums used to have an art shop in Port Douglas (L'artte) where they specialised in handcrafted A4 wall tiles depicting vintage advertisements for alcohol, exotic locations, films and other cool subjects. They have now combined their love of art and cocktails.

The walls of the venue are lined with vintage tiles and when combined with the mood lighting and the big back-lit bar Jimmy Rums has a great feel. The lighting is a little on the dark side and I had trouble reading the menu, but they definitely capture the feel of a high class bar.

The waiters are dressed in black pants and white shirts with ties, but you are made to feel comfortable even if you have walked in wearing your shorts and sandals.

The cocktail menu was overwhelming – in a good way – I don’t think there is anything they couldn’t make for you, along with a good beer and wine selection.

We were a bit pressed for time so stuck to the old standards of a Mojito and a Cosmopolitan, both of which were excellent. I saw a number of exotic drinks go out to happy patrons.

The titles that fill the walls are available for sale.

For a pre-dinner drink, a post dinner drink or in fact just a great cocktail I highly recommend this venue.

Plus the vintage tiles are great and we are still arguing about which one to buy to remember our visit.

One of the problems with travelling to small towns, as I have a habit of doing, is quite often you'll find the staff are travelers just trying to make a buck. Inevitably this means that the quality of your coffee or caprioska can vary wildly depending whether you get a barista, bar tender or primary school teacher slinging your drinks.

No such issues here, all these guys and girls are bar tenders through and through. You won't see them looking up a recipe if you ask for a Tom Collins or Mai Tai. The place itself is nice enough and has a great selection but when it comes down to it it's the staff that make this place tick.

If you know what you want, chances are Nick and Sam know how to make it. If you don't know what you want, chances are the guys behind the bar still know how to make it!

We were just wandering back to our accom and just saw the door open ventured in. ("Turned right and took a chance") Very cool landed back but friendly, fun, funky atmosphere. The cocktails are crafted well balanced and delicious (not just booze and fruit juice). We even got to meet the owner who was so delightful sharing his insights of the menu. We will be back every night they are open during our visit. Thanks for the great flavours, really worthy of a visit.

Jimmy Rum's is a really nice little bar in Port Douglas. You wouldn't expect such a bar in a place like Port Douglas. It's good that there is an alternative to beach-feeling restaurants and bars. The cocktails are also great and the guys seem to know what they are doing.
