We love The Walnut Room - the service and surroundings are wonderfully warm. The refurbishment looks & feels great - a touch of modern whilst still preserving the elegance and charm. We had the degustation which is fantastic value offering a superb range of beautiful courses matched with wines for $110 or without for $75 - only offered on Saturdays. Our waiter made us feel very welcome and the chef came out to see how we enjoyed our meals - this doesn't happen often when dining out, and really adds to the experience. We opted for the Crepe Suzette for dessert (a bit of a tradition for us) prepared at your table - we left feeling wonderfully satisfied and really taken care of. We will be back - that's for sure!!! The degustation menu changes weekly :)

Dear Guest,

What a pleasure it was to be able to prepare our famous Crepes Suzette at the table for you and your husband. Head Chef Frederick Marechal and Sous Chef Joshua Williams love to interact with our guests not only to garner feedback but also to share cooking techniques and recipes for them to try at home. Their passion and creativity can be seen in our 5-Course Saturday Degustations that sometimes include courses as a trial for upcoming menus.

We are so looking forward to welcoming both of you back this weekend for yet another special celebration!

As well as having a an excellent à la carte menu the Walnut also offers a choice of three quite different and delectable degustation menus, all of which periodically change. Recently, a new choice has been added, a special degustation menu being trialled on Saturday nights which outdoes the regular degustation menus for taste, course mixture and value.

Each special degustation menu consists of 5 courses that have been excellently crafted by Executive Chef Frederick Marechal, and each of the courses has been excellently paired with a wine selected by Restaurant Manager Rudy Cheong. Last Saturday was the fourth consecutive week of this new innovation, and every one of the 20 courses served so far has been different (my wife and I have dined there on all four nights!), mouth-watering, and scrumptious. The ingredients of each dish all complement each other without any one overpowering the rest, and the choices of wine accompanying each course provide a perfect complement to the food. It is quite obvious that lots of thought has gone into the choices of the food, its presentation, and accompanying wine for each course. The main aim behind this venture, besides of course providing patrons with a very pleasurable dining experience, is to test the possibility of adding new dishes to the Walnut's regular menus. As a result, both Frederick and Rudy are eager to receive constructive feedback from patrons, which they personally seek from all people partaking of the special menu each Saturday night.

Some people shy away from degustation menus because the name conjures up thoughts of stuffing yourself full of so much food that you can barely stand up at the end of the meal. This is certainly not the case with these special Saturday night menus. The quantities of the individual courses are just right, and at the end of the meal you feel quite sated but without feeling stuffed. The menu for each Saturday night is posted on the website by early Tuesday morning each week to give potential diners sufficient notice of what to expect (and to get excited about!)

Dear Guest,

What a delight to have you and your lovely wife join us for our Degustation Saturdays the past month! Head Chef Frederick is so pleased that his new creations have tickled your tastebuds and hopes to tempt both of you this weekend that include Mussels Mariniere with Truffle Potato Chips and Anchovy Mayonnaise. This dish will soon feature on our new-look a la carte menu (oops! Sorry, Fred!) that coincides with the relaunch of the Royal on the Park Hotel.

We are truly appreciative of your continued patronage and look forward to showing you the original archway entrance uncovered during our renovations (old management notations indicate that Robert Plant and Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin were the last guests through before it was sealed in 1974). Our floor-to-ceiling French bay windows are looking great and await the grand unveiling this weekend.

Normally the hotel restaurants aren't meant to be anything crash hot, but according to other reviews the walnut was the place to eat in Brisbane. I did not find this to be entirely true. To begin, the service was good, but we were only offered water or sparkling water for drinks and nothing more despite us mentioning soft drink as an alternative for a younger member if the family. After ordering our main, we waited 40 minutes before we were told they were busy in the kitchen and we had to wait another 15 minutes, which developed into 20. This was however worthwhile as the lamb shanks were extremely delicious. Beautifully seasoned, cooked rare, a true treat. The mash potato served on a side was also creamy and fine, and the blue pumpkin rich with flavour.

The interior is fashioned as if you've traveled 40 years into the past, truly a good looking design with crystal chandeliers and of course, the main feature, walnut furnishings and architectural pieces. Pleasing to the eyes and brings in a soft, homely feel. Very nice.

This is quite a fancy restaurant, while casual attire is accepted, formal clothing seems to be preferred. To sum up the experience, it was sound, but not anything overly great. You will most likely enjoy your meal, the food is very good, but the service is slow and the staff relatively unenthusiastic.

Dear Guest,

The evolution of the Walnut Restaurant continues with the addition of new furnishings, furniture and also a new-look menu launching shortly, featuring Braised Lamb Belly with Cranberry and Pomegranate Agro Dolce and Grilled Corn.

We are constantly reviewing our service standards and thank you for your constructive observations. It allows us to improve our guests' dining experience and maintain our iconic status currently in its 47th year.

The Royal on the Park Hotel hopes you will return soon to view the results of our extensive renovations and sample our tantalising new winter menu.

Decided to try here firstly it had great reviews and secondly was an opportunity to use the entertainment card and get up to $50 off meal. The restaurant is located next to the botanical gardens although does have the road in between. it is in the hotel on the park which is a lovely old hotel which some could consider dated. Similarly the restaurant has an old world feel with wood panels.. we heard that it is about to have a re-furb. The staff here are very pleasant, friendly and attentive. We were given water as soon as we arrived and our wine order was taken. The wine list was a little more expensive than other restaurants but not outrageously so. We ordered starters of Foie Gras with gingerbread toast and Red Apple tart with enoki mushrooms and poached egg. The Foie Gras was excellent and the gingerbread toast was a nice acompaniment even though a little hard to eat as it just broke apart on the plate. The apple tart was also really nice. For mains we ordered the Rosemary and Honey crumbed lamb rack, and the truffle salt seasoned duck breast with Nashi pear. Both dishes were large and we probably didn't need the two sides of steamed chat potatoes and buttered carrots. The Lamb was perfectly cooked and came with a large portion of mash. The duck again was well cooked, the nashi pair and the cherries cut through the meat which was great, the only thing I didn't like was the eggplant caviar. The carrots were really nice too and came with flaked almonds. We decided to eat a shared dessert of caramelised banana and walnut creme brûlée, this was a real surprised because when it turned up it was on fire... you waited for the flame to die down before tucking in. Unfortunately for me I didn't like the alcohol taste left behind and it did also mean that the brûlée wasn't crispy on the top which is what I think it needs to have - just cracking it open with your spoon. I also didn't really like the banana it was too dense and to be honest had a black look at the bottom of the dish... not a favourite and wouldn't have again. All in all not a bad meal here, not the best I have had but would go back.

Dear Guest,

Our Head Chef, Frederick Marechal, is deeply appreciative of your in-depth review of our food. Yes, the Walnut Restaurant is currently draped in cloths as our renovators are hard at work building a new fireplace and re-creating our restaurant foyer. We are still welcoming guests as normal and do ask for patience and understanding during our metamorphosis.

Frederick is eagerly waiting to launch his new a la carte menu to celebrate Royal on the Park Hotel's new look. One of his signature dishes is rumoured to be (shhhh!) an Orange Crème Brulee with Caramel Wafer and Passionfruit Double Cream. The new menu will have brand new features that give a nod to The Classics whilst embracing The Contemporary. Intrigued? Do keep up to date on our website and take the opportunity to sign up for our complimentary Royal Rewards Programme.
