I stayed here for Christmas and New Years 2010/2011 and don't regret it at all. It's in King Cross which is a bit ghetto but still the best place to be. In easy walking distance to the Botanical gardens and the city.
The bathrooms/toilets were cleaned twice a day which was great, but they do get dirty quick - ie; the floors. There were a fair few cockroaches too, I only spotted one small one in our room on my last night, and we saw 3 downstairs in the kitchen area, which is a bit off-putting, but anywhere in Kings Cross will have them to be honest. The rooms were clean but weren't cleaned by staff, only the bins changed - it's a hostel though, so you expect it.
Bunks were comfortable, you get fresh linen when you check in, you have a fridge too. Rooms differed though, mine was small with just two bunk beds and a fridge, only a couple of shelves which were already taken up and not all the lights worked, where as another room was twice the size and had a sink, fans, more storage space etc. I had no where to put anything so had to literally live out of my backpack, which was a big deal but its still nice to have a shelve or something to put your few bits and bobs on while your asleep.
Value for money is great, compared to other places it was the cheapest and had amazing views over the city on the roof top - which is well worth it - I'm so glad I stayed there, and would again 100%. All the people who stay and work there are great guys and you don't get no idiots which was nice. They always have something going on in the evening too which is good. Downstairs they have two kitchen areas with free breakfast in the morning, free tea and coffee (and sugar) all day but you need your own milk, plenty of seating, two TV's, drinks machine, two PC's and wi-fi which is $2 an hour of $5 for 3 hrs, loads of literature and flyers, jobs and cars for sale folders... it has everything you need!

This hostel was average however I would still stay there again and recommend to friends. Despite hearing about Kings Cross being a seedy area, I loved the location - very close to the harbour (you walk through the botanical gardens to get there which is also a nice touch), and the nightlife was very good. People everywhere, lots of bars. The rooms were nice and big - the bathrooms were okay, but it's a hostel so I didn't expect anything better. The only thing I really didn't like was there was no sort of common room. There were common areas like the kitchen but it wasn't conducive to just hanging around and getting to know people. There is an upstairs roofdeck which is nice to chill and relax on.

Having just returned from our world trip we are reviewing our experiences with the accommodations we stayeed at. This accommodation has its good and bad points. All in all we stayed one night, and did go back and stay one more night on our return to Sydney, so it can't be that bad! Pricewise it was ok, the place is not amazing, but the rooms are not too bad. It is a hostel after all and a very busy one at that! The plus points is the roof terrace which is perfect for some drinks and the sunset over the skyline after a hard days sightseeing. There is a bbq on the roof too so a great place to chill. Location wise it is a good spot and you can walk right into the heart of the harbour from here.

This was the worst backpackers I'd ever stayed at until we tried the Palms round the corner a few days later. This wasn't quite that bad. The room had a fridge - it had to because there was no room in the kitchen for fridges or freezers - which is good from a food security standpoint, but means you have to put up with the noise of the old fridge running all night. It had a TV in the room, also good, and even offered towels for free, and there was a free breakfast. These are all good things, but this place fails on the basics.

The communal areas are tiny and cramped, and were in the process of being made smaller while we were there with the addition of a new drink vending machine. The kitchen is like a corridor with a couple of sinks and a cooktop and oven - way too small foe the size of the hostel, and with not nearly enough cups, plates or cutlery. I couldn't figure out why no-one dried their dishes and then realised that there were no tea towels to be found. The bathrooms were like cupboards off the corridor - one with a loo and basin that was so cramped I couldn't sit on the toilet straight because my knees hit the wall, and one with a shower that didn't even have a shower curtain - literally a tiled cupboard with a showerhead and drain. The hostel advertising seemed very proud of the wooden floor on the ground floor, but this just added to the noise, and we were staying on the ground floor - all night we could hear clump, clump, clump and slam as people went up and down the corridor and through the door to the kitchen. Maybe it was quieter upstairs, but it also looked dingier. Our bed was missing slats, causing it to sag at the foot, and the mattress was old, hard and lumpy and gave us both a sore back. At least we had a window - some of the rooms didn't.

It seemed like it could be a much better place they got rid of the down stairs rooms and expanded the kitchen and lounge, and maybe used some of the space to put some proper bathrooms in. Maybe it's roof top is a cool place to hang out, but that's irrelevant when it's cold and wet outside, so a hostel has to have decent indoor communal areas.

So you see the name Sydney Central...well what a load of crap that name is...if sydney central means a 50 min walk to all the attractions then ok. seriously this place was beyond a joke..!! The staff were rude and extremelly unhelpful( especially the stuck up english girl). For people that have never been to sydney you would never know where to go or places to see or things to do because the staff are unwilling to help.
We booked months in advance and upon arrival our beds had not been stripped and the previous people belongings were still in our room...so instead of changing our beds the asked us to upgrade to a double room for an xtra 70 buks... lol wat a joke.... finally to top it of the 4 bed room was smaller than what you would call a box room there was no ventilation as it was like a building within a building...oh i nearly forgot our fan was broken. There was just a mouldy off smell throughout the whole place.
We a no means fussy people and will dont mind ruffing it but this place was just unhealthy!!!
