About a week ago, my wife, her friend and I went to Chatswood Westfield shopping centre and were looking for a suitalbe place to have lunch. We decided to try Malaysian food for a change. We were not very far from the Chatswood Interchange. We went to the Petaling Street Restaurnt which is in the Chatswood Interchange at the podium level. Petaling Street is among a small group of restaurants. They serve hawker style food which we have tried in Quala Lumpur many years ago. The food is very reasonably priced. We did not want to have a heavy lunch, but ended up ordering four dishes to be shared among us. Service was excellent. We got our food prepared and served within minutes. Their salted fish fried rice was not the true authentic Malaysian dish we expected. It was good, but made to suit Australian palate. Their Garlic Kangkung dish and the Eggplant dish were really good. Their Beef Rendang went well with the salted fried rice. It was a quick but reasonably good lunch. We ordered coffee from the adjoining shop. I checked with the restaurant staff and found this group of restaurants are open only till about 9:00PM. Some of them close around 8:30PM. They are not meant for late night customers.
If you are in Chatswood, either in the Westfield shopping centre or near the railway station, this is a good place to drop in for lunch.

Petaling Street is one of our favorite Malaysian resto in the city. A few competing restos like Sedap and Pappa Rich always comes to mind if craving for Malaysia food, but Petaling Street won our hearts tonight because of their homemade tofu dish! The dish is fried tofu with pork mince and egg white sauce (or something like that). My partner was craving for his curry fish head (he is Malaysian and he loves his curry) so we ordered the curry fish head ( a massive serving - I would say good for 4) for the price of $28.
We ordered plain rice and had drinks (teh tarik and soya with red bean). Total bill came to $58.00 with leftover for lunch tomorrow. Not bad for a dinner night out. Probably pricey (due to the fish curry head) but thoroughly enjoyed the flavour and we don't feel ripped out for the serving portion.

Went alone for a late night bite in this joint and ordered the Fried Kway Teow (a personal favourite of mine among Malaysian street foods.) In Malaysia, you might pay a third of the price for the same thing, but as we are only talking the $10-range and this is a more expensive country they can hardly be faulted. There were some seriously undersized vegetable dishes on display on the nearby tables, so I suspect that to avoid being ripped off one should really stick to ordering standard hawker staples.

Portion size was adequate but only 2 prawns, which means they lose out in my books to a few of the Pad Thai offerings in the vicinity (eg Prik Thai) and this is why they have a star removed.

Final word though: that this place is authentic. Plenty of MY/SG people fulfilling their nostalgic cravings, and I would return.

We went there for dinner and were seated downstairs. The service was efficient and the food was served pretty fast. We ordered the roti with chicken as appetizer. The roti was a little too greasy but the chicken was tender and tasty. It's the same chicken they serve in the chicken curry dish. The Hainanese chicken rice was tasty but the portion was very small. We also had a fried noodle dish which was above average. The spicy laksa was good too, although I've tasted better ones at the Singapore Airline lounge lol. The major disappointment was the vegetable. I think it costs 16 AUD and it was very greasy; definitely over priced and not worth it. Overall we spent 75 AUD for a dinner of 4 on the so called "street food".
