Owner description: Festival of flowers. Entertainment, arts and crafts and gourmet food.

The centrepiece of Floriade is of course the wonderful floral display but it offers so much more. Entertainment, trade displays and stalls, food & wine, workshops and information sessions and more. A really enjoyable day out and best of all it's FREE! Was a bit disappointed at the cost of entry to the Da Vinci Machines display ($50/family or $20/single) so didn't go in even though it was supposed to be a highlight for us.

While entry is free, my time could have been better spent.

1. The flower displays are very low quality. In between the many flowers that...well never flowered, it is virtually impossible to see how many of the displays bear any relationship to the picture they are meant to show. One display this year claimed to be about the Taj Mahal - just without the mausoleum and the towers! It was surrounded by non-flowering plants.
2. There aren't that many flower displays. It would probably take 15 minutes to see every bed at a very slow walking pace.
3. The 'sand castles' that are rolled out every year are anything but. They are cardboard like structures blasted with a little bit of sand to give the impression of authenticity.
4. Probably due to the lack of flowers and the low quality of displays, the organisers (the ACT gov't) have rolled out show style shopping, a ferris wheel, free concerts and buskers come beggars. If the flowers were any good these add-ons would not be necessary.

I never ceased to be amazed as to how many people travel so far to see so little.
