We are cruising Fiji in our catamaran and recently spent several nights anchored off Sau Bay Retreat on the island of Vanua Levu. Wow!! What a gorgeous gorgeous place - a tranquil boutique retreat only reached by boat with capacity for a maximum of 12 guests. Carol and Nigel, the owners and managers, couldn't have been more welcoming and hospitable, and we had some lovely evenings enjoying the delicious alfresco meals and the views of the bay. The huge raintree at the front of the resort provides wonderful shade and ambience, the staff are very friendly and helpful. We took the opportunity to go out in their dive boat to Rainbow Reef, one of the top dive sites in the world, and had an incredible dive with beautiful soft and hard corals and thousands of fish. Anchor off the resort near the mooring balls - it's quite deep but good holding. Nigel tells us he has plans to install some heavy-duty moorings which will make it even more attractive to visiting yachts. They can also organise day trips to the island of Taveuni, or other local excursions. We loved our time here and will definitely be back one day soon.

We had an incredible time at Sau Bay! It was secluded (only accessible by boat) with all of the amenities we needed. The food was delicious (we are foodies) and the staff was friendly and very accomodating. We spent most our days relaxing in the sun on the private beach drinking coconut rums and SSS (Sun, Sand & Serenity) cocktails (special request with Sera), kayaking in the bay and relaxing in our villa. We also went deep sea fishing, visited Taveuni to hike to waterfalls and had a Kava ceremony with the local villagers which was a very unique experience. Out of all the places we stayed in Fiji, we had the best time at Sau Bay. We will definitely be back again. Bula and Vinaka!

Room Tip: If available, get the tent. It's glamping at it's best. Incredible views and privacy.

I researched a trip to Fiji for years and decided to spend 9 nights at Sau Bay. The goal was to see the soft coral in the Somasoma straight/Rainbow reef and have a place to snorkel at the resort, and this place met and exceeded my expectations. On three days of scuba, my wife and I had the dive boat to ourselves (depends on other guests). The resort only has 5 cottages, and the staff to guest ratio is fantastic. The best way is to fly to Taveuni in the 19 seat turbo prop (bring ear plugs). Then you will take a taxi ride to a dock for a 20 or so minute ride in the dive boat to the resort (common in Fiji). The resort does not have a dock so there is a short wade in knee deep water in and out to the boat (water shoes are helpful).
We were in a 1 BR next to the African tent. We used the AC at nights to keep my better half happy. The food is really good. There is no road to this place. All meals are at the resort. You have choices between two things for lunch and dinner. There is a desert with lunch and dinner.
Sara and the staff put together a private dinner for the night of our Anniversary, which we did on a deck of one of the cottages. They made a nice evening with candle lit meal, baked a cake with our names in the frosting, and sang to us.
This was my first time to Fiji to see the soft coral. The scuba diving was great for this, anemone fish watching, blue spotted stingrays, "cabbage patch" and table hard coral formations that we don't have easy access to from the US. Some of this is also available by snorkeling in front of the resort.
Other highlights were the Tavoro waterfalls and a beach day on a small island off Taveuni. On the waterfall trip, the first is easy, but getting to 2nd falls is a challenging hike with crossing over streams that have slippery rocks. Carol, Nigel, Sara, John, Carl and the rest of the people at Sau Bay are very friendly and always did their best for us. I am very happy we chose Sau Bay.

Room Tip: The African tent is larger and the most remote location. The other 1 BR are all similar and nice.

We chose Sau Bay for 7-day stay largely based on TripAdvisor and Expedia reviews. We can see why people liked it. Being quite small its easy to meet and get to know other guests but still have your own space. The weather wasn't that kind to us but still managed to go out for a picnic and snorkeling trip at a small island close to Taveuni, diving and snorkeling right out in front of the resort, diving out at Rainbow Reef, a short bushwalk up the nearby hill, and - one of our best days - go on a tour on Taveuni to various spots: the 180 meridian line, traditional village, and hike and swim at the Tavoro waterfalls which were great!
The meal plan gets you quite a variety of well prepared and delicious starters, mains and desserts. Sera and team did a great job of looking after us.

Sau Bay is in a stunning location, you arrive only by boat. No roads, so once your there you get to enjoy the feeling of being relaxed without the hustle and bustle.

The 120+ year old tree that sits in front of the main restaurant sitting area is a photographers dream. Perfect spot for sunset drinks. Loved waking up to the sounds of the wildlife in the morning and the ocean lapping the shore. Many dogs to make you feel at home. The bure's are made of real quality, are comfortable and the bedding was the best we encountered whilst in Fiji. Great outdoor shower and views of the ocean while laying in bed. A small kitchenette provides freshly brewed coffee and free shortbread in your room. Loved this.

Menu plan was great. Tasty food.

We did a total of 4 dives on Rainbow Reef which were organised by the owner Nigel and Carl the boat captain. Nigel was extremely professional and helped out when we needed. The soft corals and wildlife were the best I've seen. No swimming pool, but snorkelling just off shore from your Bure is exceptional.

Look at flights out at the same time as booking accommodation as they fill up fast.

25% Tax on top of all prices.
