This was our 11th time to the Maldives and 12th resort. We enjoyed our holiday last year in the Gaafu Dhaalu atoll, at Dhevanafushi, so much, due in part to the fantastic marine life, that we decided to return to the same Atoll but visit a different resort. We chose Konotta based on the wonderful reviews (especially from Forum regular Lynphd) and also it met our criteria for a Maldives island resort – barefoot luxury, no sea walls, as isolated as possible with not too many islands nearby and a great house reef. We made our booking with Amit at Simply Maldives who was really helpful and got us a great rate (he let us know about the AI upgrade offer which we did not know about) as well as helping us secure our preferred villa location.

All I can say is we choose well! Konotta is not only a beautiful island with lovely villas and great food and service but it is also the best value for money 5 star resort we have stayed in so far in the Maldives. There were a few touches/things missing that we have experienced at other 5 star Maldives resorts such as Kihavah and Huvafen Fushi but the additional cost of these resorts to have these things is very high when Konotta pretty much provides everything else that you would expect of a 5 star resort at a more modest price.

As this review is long I have broken my review down into sections to make it easier to read.

Yes Konotta is a long way from Male but it is worth the extra travel time to be so remote and we find the journey okay and all part of the adventure. Our BA flight landed 50 minutes late into Male at 10.30 so we assumed we would miss the 11.20 domestic flight but luckily our bags were the first off and the lovely Konotta rep asked if we would mind running for our flight which we did! We boarded with 10 mins to spare and our bags were sent on the later afternoon flight which was no problem as we always pack a bikini and shorts in our hand luggage! Once we arrived at Kaadedhdhoo Airport we were met by another Konotta member of staff who took us and the others arrivals to the Konotta speedboat which took about 30 minutes to the resort. We were greeted by various members of staff and given palm necklaces and a coconut drink. We were then introduced to our host, Lai, and taken straight to our water villa to do the check in there. We had a wonderful arrival presentation of a cheese board, savory and sweet snacks, chocolates and a bottle of champagne. So as soon as we were able we were in the pool drinking our champagne – bliss!

Water villa
We had requested a water villa in the range of 307 – 310 as these are towards the end of the jetty and look out to the ocean rather than to the island/service jetty side. This side is not the sunset side but we could actually see a side sunset view from our villa (310) and had the sun on the deck all day which was perfect for us. The villa is really huge with a large bedroom and very large separate lounge/dining area. The bathroom is, unusually, set at the back of the villa and whilst it has windows these are either covered with blinds for privacy or (as in the shower and toilet room) have frosted glass so no view at all which is shame as in the past every water villa we have stayed in has had great views from either the bath or the shower of the ocean. However the compensation is that the bedroom and lounge are side by side and both have full length doors/windows to the deck/pool and view and mean the deck is lovely and long and spacious. In fact the deck was one of the things we loved most about the villa. The double day/sunbeds are set on a raised platform and the views are incredible – given the way the villa is built the views are the very open and we could watch marine life below us from both the day beds and the pool. The pool is set with the long side overlooking the edge and is really lovely with jets you can turn off and on as you wish. The views from the deck were of two distant deserted islands and in the very, very far distance a couple of resorts. Probably the best view we have had from a water villa so far along with Huvafen Fushi’s view from their ocean villas. The décor in the villas is luxurious although a little more “corporate” than some other resorts we have stayed in but we were very overall happy with the inside as well as the outside of the villa. The minibar area in the room is stocked with beers, soft drinks and snacks and there is also a wine fridge (not part of AI). There is complimentary tea and Nespresso machine with pods replaced daily. Good wifi in the room (and around the resort) although not speedy but sufficient and you can stream music through the TV.

The island is one of the most beautiful we have been to – on a par with Kihavah and in fact probably more of a true “desert island” feel as it is much smaller and less manicured. The beaches are the best in terms of soft white powdery sand everywhere and walking around the beach looking at all the shades of blue of the sea was a daily past time we really enjoyed. There are no sea walls or groynes which does mean the sand shifts throughout the year and there are some beach villas with no/not much beach at all (202 – 209) due to a rocky area which whilst very private and facing the sunset would not be my choice but many will like them for the privacy and sunset views. The best beach villas in terms of lovely sandy area in front and access to the stunning lagoon and reef are 200 and 201 followed by 113, 114 and 100 – 102. If I was to stay in a beach villa I would request 201 or 113.

House Reef
After last year at Dhevanafushi we didn’t expect to ever snorkel such a great reef again in terms of marine life but Konotta is as good and actually better for spotting sharks and turtles! We saw lots of white and black tip reef sharks on every snorkel, the occasional nurse shark and turtles nearly every time. Lots of huge parrot fish, groupers, fusiliers and all the other usual suspects. Saw a few eagle rays, eels, octopus, puffers and saw small and large sting rays in the shallows whilst walking around the island. We also saw daily a turtle popping up for air just in front of our water villa as well as dolphins on one occasion only metres from our deck (we were very close to the drop off). We also saw dolphins a couple of times from the bar and one evening during cocktails on the Grand Water villa deck. So in terms of marine life we ticked all the boxes but we didn’t, unfortunately, despite looking for it, manage to see the guitar shark who others have spotted!

Food and drinks
We were on all-inclusive which we have only done once before (at Moofushi as it was standard) as the resorts we have stayed at before either don’t offer it or we have chosen B&B instead which works out better for us but there was a free upgrade offer to AI so we were not going to say no! The food was really, really good and probably some of the best we have had in the Maldives. There was not one dish I could fault and the choices on the menu in Blue Salt were extensive and varied – mixture of European, Asian, Indian and Italian with only a few dishes with very reasonable supplements (lobster, seafood platters etc). Breakfast was really good with a buffet for pastries/breads, juices, cereals, yoghurts, meats/cheeses and various other items (including prosecco and a Bloody Mary station!) and an extensive a la carte menu. Eggs benedicts were best I have had. Nalah Rah is the Tappanyaki and Sushi restaurant – we had Tappanyaki twice (one is included in AI deal then you pay a small supplement to go again) and it is a set menu (you choose beef or fish/shellfish for main course) and is served at a live cooking station where the chef entertains as well as cooks. Great fun. We also had the sushi menu one night which is served at another live cooking station on the other side of the restaurant – excellent fresh sushi and sashimi! The executive chef, Chris, has done a great job with the menus and he and his team are willing to make anything to order too – we had a lovely Thai Red Curry made for us on our last night. There is a lovely bar by the pool deck, with seating all around it serving a wide range of cocktails and drinks – pretty much all are included on the AI plan. There are several wine choices by the glass as well as bottles on the AI plan – we found a lovely petit chablis which we had for a dinner a few times. Prosecco is also included.

Outstanding – really lovely staff and their ability to display just the right mix of friendly yet efficient service was exemplary. We were very impressed by the genuine willingness to make everything perfect for us and the staff seem to be very happy and all get on well. Niluka, the F & B manager is wonderful – probably the most hard working and attentive person I have come across before! He was always smiling and had time to chat to us whilst keeping a keen on eye on what was going on around him. His team in the bar and restaurant were great – a special mention to Chandana who supervised the restaurant and went out of his way to ensure we had all we wanted at breakfast and dinner and also to Yasir (who was our butler last year at Dhevanafushi and who recognized us on our second day) - he is so sweet and brought us fresh coconut drinks every day. Also a big thank you to Yasmin who was not our villa host but who “adopted” us as she was host to some friends we made at Konotta and always asked how we were doing and looked after us. Also must mention Joel the wonderful Tappenyuki chef whose sense of humour and ability to toss cutlery and eggs around made these dinners great fun and Anna the “pool girl” who is super and a breath of fresh air around the pool. Nice to see her doing what is usually a male job too!

The spa is run by a lovely Australian lady called Amanda who looked after us brilliantly. As well as the complimentary hour massage we got in our package I had a couple of other treatment including a great hot stone massage and a pedicure. All the spa staff are charming and the two that did my massages were very skilled.

Unfortunately, the only negative was that we, and most other guests, were bitten frequently and extensively by mosquitoes in the evening when in the bar/pool area and this is the first time, in any Maldives island, this has happened to us.They do fog daily and were aware of the issue which I believe was short term and unusual and possibly due to some unseasonable wet weather before we arrived. It didn’t spoil our holiday but was a nuisance but at least the team at Konotta recognised the issue and I am sure it has been/will be sorted quickly

Observations/areas for improvement
Water villa jetty had no pots of water on it – every other resort we have stayed at have pots spaced along the jetty or at the very least at the start so you can wash sand off your feet. Meant we were always trailing sand into our villa.

First resort we have been to where the bed was never decorated or any towel art done – even when we stayed at Filitheyo which is a 3/4 start resort we had bed decorations on arrival or departure

The island has been left in a very natural state which is lovely but we did miss the colour of some flowers here and there around the interior – again something we have seen in all other resorts visited. I do wonder if the very natural state - dead branches hanging off trees/laying on the ground (not the paths which were always cleared) and fallen leaves and coconuts rotting may contribute to the mosquito issue. Most other islands we have seen them cutting down dead/dying branches and clearing fallen coconuts and leaves and in fact on some islands coconuts are taken off trees before they fall – we actually witnessed a close call when a coconut fell only inches from someone walking under a tree!

The thatching on the water villa roofs is in a very bad state of repair. As this is only aesthetic it doesn’t affect anything except look pretty unsightly. We know it is hard to continually maintain things in the Maldives (and, I am sure, to engage workmen with the number of current and new resorts) but whilst we are used to seeing some sparse thatching on islands here some villas were really bad and we were surprised it had been allowed to deteriorate so much as you cannot miss it when walking up the jetty. I guess the beach villa roofs may be as bad but you cannot see this due to the amount of palm trees around them.

The above observations are very much “first world problems” but worth mentioning however all in all Konotta was pretty much perfect for us and easily becomes one of our favorites and in terms of value for money it is without doubt number one. Outstanding service/food and the natural beauty and remoteness of the island were the highlights for us. We would happily go back and are in fact considering it for another two week holiday next year.

Room Tip: For water villas 301 - 310 and for beach villas, with good beach and views, 200, 201, 113, 114 and 100 - 102.

First of all, thank you all for making our trip the most relaxing and recharging one we ever had. We normally travel cities or do trips with several stops. This time we decided to go for a beach holiday to really realx and get some new energy for the new year. When checking for several options, we came to the conclusion to visit the Maledives. Then it was 'only' the matter of choosing between different hotels. There are so many beautiful hotels on these islands which makes it difficult to decide. What made us choose the Konotta Outrigger: 1) the hotel has a beautiful reef around the entire island, which makes it easy to sknorkel and enjoy the underwater world 2) the island is very small and personal, which is important for us 3) the food was ranked very good, another important point for us 3) the hotel is relatively new 4) the pictures in the internet looked amazing = ). Of course when booking a vacation like that this comes with certain expectations especially as the amount you spend to go there is rather high. Which of course is due to the fact that the cost to maintain the infrastructure on every island in the maldives is very high and hotels are charged with massive taxes on pork meat and alcohol as this is forbidden in the maldives.
We were not disappointed at all. We really were able to stop worrying and thinking one second after we stepped out of the airplane. After a long flight to Male we were greeted by Jalleal knowing our names and brought to a waiting area where we could drink and eat something until our connecting flight brought us to the south of the Maledives. When we arrived at the small airport in the south we were welcomed again and brought to a small boat to bring us to Konotta. The travel to the island with the boat took around 30 minutes and the water was so still that the clouds refllected on the surface of the sea.
When arriving on the island we were greeted by the island manager Guilleaume and our host Joey and fresh coconuts. This is something I truly miss. As the room was no ready then we sat down on a small table in the sand, under palm trees to have some drinks and a small lunch. The lunch menu is wonderful and has something for every taste. When sitting there we suddenly saw some Delphines showing up right in front of the island. We felt like in a dream, all was perfect.
And it stayed that way. The sun welcomed us every morning but one, the clear blue water (we have never seen shades of blue soooo blue) invited us to snokel around the island and see turtles, sting rays, tons of colorful fish, octopus, sharks (not the dangerous ones), and tunas.
A special thanks to Niluka and his team: Ahmed, Hassan (always spoke some German with us), Faru, Na-Am and Chandana. You have wonderful people making everyone feeling so welcome. Chandana was able to read our minds and fulfill all of the wishes we could only have dreamt of. Thank you. Every morning we had fresh coconut and a beautiful plate with fresh fruit on our table in the sand.
Also a big thank you to the pool bar team, Loi, Yahya and Shafrat, for always meeting our tastes of drinks and reinvneting the drinks menu and doing some magic. I alread tried some of the G&T at home, yours was so much better. Also big thanks to Maach for always taking care of us.
We had 2 dinners in the Nala Rah (1x Teppanyaki and 1x Sushi) - thanks a lot Joel and Enda for your wonderful food and great characters. You are so much fun. We even learned how to do pickled Ginger. Will try it soon.
Something you should not miss is to do a backoffice tour. We had the chance to meet Azim, the lead engineer on the island. He showed us how they maintain the infrastructure (clean water, electricity, recycling) on the island. Did you know that Konotta is not using any plastik bottles etc. and reusing glass to build walls / houses to be more environmentally friendly? Thanks to Azim and also Upali and Laisa for great insights into what is happening behind the scenes. We were also able to see some other rooms to decide where we want to stay next time. To be honest we are still going to stay in the beach villa to have this beautiful powder sugar beach and the palm trees all around us. Thank you Adam for always taking care of our villa so beautifully and for the amazing surprise at the end (hope to see you sing and dance again).
Something not to miss mentioning is the Amanda and her great team in the Spa. I had wonderful hours with all of you and you made me relax even more, if this is even possible. Amada, please give my regards to everyone and also to the cute little yellow bird I met during my last visit.
We are already planning on coming back and would again choose the All Inclusive option as this makes the life even more easier and relaxing.
Thanks you all for your engagement and love during the time we stayed with you. We gained a lot of new friends. See you very soon.
Roman & Laura

Room Tip: Villa 200 and 201 have a beautiful view when the sun rises and are very close to the restaurants and pool area.

My partner and I just spent the most amazing 7 days in an over water private pool villa at Konotta Maldives Resort. The resort is amazing including pristine beaches, crystal clear waters, and tranquil bush-lands. Snorkeling daily we were never disappointed, seeing too numerous fish kinds to mention, and octopus, turtles, reef sharks, rays, squid and eels. No words can begin to describe the service provided at Konotta. All staff posses a rare skill of observing guests needs no matter how large or small and offering something to address that need before you even had chance to think of it never mind request it. Their courteous, polite manner is a credit to the resort, they simply cannot do enough for you. We would like to thank all staff but have to make a special mention to Yasir, Chadon, Nisbah, Na Am, Mahesh and Maah who provided exemplary service and a genuine kind friendship which we will never forget. The quality of the food served at the Blue Salt Restaurant is five star, and both my partner and I could not resist the different curries most nights and even for breakfast !!!
The villa itself is huge, clean, and very comfortable, and the fact you can enter the water to snorkel off of your decking is remarkable. We used the free water-sports and once again the staff at the dive centre and equipment store were friendly, courteous and helpful, providing great assistance with my poor stand up paddle boarding skills and catamaran navigation.
Outrigger Konotta Maldives Resort is a slice of paradise and we cannot wait to return.

Room Tip: Decide if you want a beach villa or over water villa. Water villa rooms have either sunrise or sunset as you prefer, both are exceptional.

My husband and I travelled from London to Outrigger with our two children ages 6 months and 2years old. Overall the stay at Outrigger was absolutely magnificent and here are the details of why below..

Before we left London, my husband made sure to clarify what our Blissful package included from the hotel as there was some discrepancy from what was sold to us by Destination2 and what the hotel said we had paid for. In the end, Destination2 ironed this out for us and we managed to get everything we had paid for. This was so worthwhile as we used the In Villa Dining lots with the kids, and had extensive use of the premium items in the minibar (Tatt on tap!).

We arrived to Outrigger pretty exhausted with the children and I have to say that I was a bit worried with what to expect as we had been told we had a yacht transfer and instead we had a speedboat to the island. I know it sounds silly, but when you are paying a premium you do expect all these luxury touches.

Anyhow, I shouldn't have worried. After an initial room change as I felt the first room smelt mouldy (101), we settled in our beautiful villa, 111. There was a delicious spread waiting for us with a bottle of sparkling wine (unfortunately, ours was corked, but no matter as we popped the Tattinger) with personalised cookies for the boys. Our delightful in villa host was Kim, a very sweet lovely lady who became our go-to for all bookings, any questions and in fact anything we needed at all. I simply had to whatsapp her my queries/bookings and it was done in the blink of an eye. Zero hassle.

We dropped the children off to the wonderful Kids Club, run by Mel who was great at looking after both boys. There is a shallow and sizeable children pool outside where the two year old would often swim under the watch of the KC ladies. I was very impressed at the range of activities, from collecting an painting shells/coconuts, paying with toys, hand painting and of course, watching movies. I used to drop the children off around lunchtime, and it was no trouble for them to feed both children there. This was a massive plus for me as my two year old is known to eat very slowly. The staff would then drop the kids back to us wherever we were in the resort.

Days quickly developed a routine; breakfast outdoors at Blue Salt, KC for the children, diving for my husband whilst I relaxed by the main pool or on our own private stretch of beach. Lunch was had with poolside or in villa dining, with dinner reservations for us adults at any of the different options.

We have been to the Maldives a few times now and I have to say that I was blown away with Chef Chris. He is extremely talented and runs a great tea, who all produce fantastic quality food. All this on a tiny island in the Indian Ocean! Our favourite was the Teppanyaki restaurant, Nala Rah which was a great evening out and a feast for the senses.

My husband enjoyed the dive centre, he felt the team were competent and all dives were well organised.

The spa was not as luxurious as I would expect a resort in this calibre to have. The relaxation room before treatment smelt stuffy and looked tired and the treatment room felt very basic. However the treatment was great and the pool was lovely in the sense that was so private. The magazines to read on offer around the pool could be improved and the complimentary tea that was given to me was awful taste wise, so this could definitely improve.

Overall, we had a wonderful time. I particularly liked the villa design and layout in the end. The beach is amazing as is the snorkelling. In fact, the snorkelling is world class. I am a Rescue Diver and have dived extensively around the world and the house reef at Outrigger is just incredible. Every time we went snorkelling we would see large shoals of all kinds of fish, numerous turtles, sharks, rays.. It was the reason why we chose this resort, and although I did find the travel far from London, it was so worth it. Baros also had a great house reef, but this was even better!

Our son loved the trips we did. We went on the "submarine", which was great as he could see all the sharks and rays and coral etc.. Even better was the dolphin trip, where we were led by one of the water sports staff out into the ocean to be surrounded by a pod of dolphins.. amazing, just amazing.

These memories we have from our holiday in Outrigger are priceless. Our son talks on a daily basis about all the amazing marine life he saw and that alone was worth the holiday.

I'm due to go to the One and Only later this year and it's going to be really hard for them to beat the Outrigger Konotta!! We will have to come back.

Kim, once again, thank you for everything!
