We had a wonderful weekend in Over Haddon staying at the Rustic Barn. The cottage is very well equipped and very cosy. The downstairs shower is superb - very powerful. The surrounding countryside is stunning with plenty of local walks and the village pub, just a 3 minute walk away, is very friendly and serves excellent food. We will return.
The cottage is well resourced and a good size for a group of 5. In good warm spring weather, the outdoor courtyard was beautiful, and is a great place to sit and relax with a coffee in the morning or a glass of wine in the evening. If you have young children, this would be a safe spot for them to play, as well as a good little playground 100 metres from the house. There are good simple walks along a nearby river, as well as lots of walks over hill and dale.
Bakewell is lovely picturesque town. Lots of good coffee shops or tea rooms. The Bakewell pudding is a must. A short drive away is Chartwell House. It is not cheap, but well worth the price for a family. The farmyard was a hit with all of us. In the spring there were newborn lambs, piglets and cattle. There are also opportunities for you to handle the animals. There is a good adventure playground too. The gardens are stunning, and lots to see and do, including a good small maze. The paths are well kept, and are generally mud free. If it is warm, for kids, take a change of footwear, and even other clothes, as they will be tempted to walk in the cascade of water. The house itself is decorated with many pieces of artwork. Chartwell also has a farm shop nearby. The food is well priced for a farm shop. This could provide a good family meal for fraction of the cost of a nearby pub.
The other main attraction on our visit was the Hieghts of Abraham, this is good on a clear day. The alpine style chairlift is a good way to get up to the top. Once at the top, there are two cave networks with guided tours. Both tours cover similar aspects of the lead mining, but each has its own stories. If you feel more adventurous, and want a cheaper visit, you can walk up to the top. There is also a visitor centre designed in an alpine style with stunning views of the valley. The visitor centre as information on the settlement, with a simple explanation of the forces that created the mines as well as the geology of the area. This is an full fossil of an ichthyosaur, as well as other small fossils from the Carboniferous.
Overall, the cottage is a great location to get about the Peak District.
This is a very nice cottage in a lovely quiet village. Its an easy drive of everywhere in the Peak District whilst having lovely walking routes of it's own around the village.
Very comfortable with all the home comforts.
This warm and welcoming cottage is a little gem. Set in a gorgeous village, its lovely surrounding courtyard feels very secluded yet friendly and full of charm. The layout was perfect, it was well equipped and so toasty inside. We had a great time and when we were snowed in, the owners couldn’t have been more helpful. We’d definitely recommend Rustic Barn, we had an amazing weekend and hope to be back.
Excellent stay. So glad to come back after staying with friends and bring family this time. They loved the place too and we’ll certainly be booking again! Clear instructions in advance of arriving, good communications from Lisa and felt welcomed on arrival as it was so warm and cosy.
