You may well be invited into the Taverna's kitchen to choose what you want to eat from the pans on the hobs. George, the owner of the hotel Xenia and taverna is the chef. He cooks some delicious meals, including a barbecue of chicken or goat on some evenings. He uses local ingredients cooking some amazing dishes with courgettes, aubergines and peppers. He also uses fish which they have caught in Skafia the same day. His slow cooked local lamb in olive oil is very tasty. You may be offered a complementary glass of Raki after your meal.

The Xenia restaurant is attached to the Xenia Hotel and sits on a rocky peninsula at the western end of Sfakia'a harbour. Vana does the cooking and Noray is the tireless waiter. The food is well-prepared from the freshest of ingredients and served at indoor and outdoor tables with sea views. The day we ate there was very hot, over 30 degrees C, so all we wanted was a refreshing Greek salad and some home style bread, and that is exactly what we got. Delicious

The waterside setting is super, as with almost every taverna in Hora Sfakion. In traditional fashion, we were welcomed into the kitchen and shown the range of dishes for that evening. We chose stuffed peppers and tomatoes, lemon chicken and meatballs with chips. It was all very tasty and good value - 35€ for three.

Came in at 8 pm, restaurant half full.
Waiter running but not very efficient.
Waited people that came 5 minutes after us first before coming to us.
After bringing our drinks it took a long time for him to come back and tell us to go to the kitchen, instead of giving us the menu.
In the kitchen a lot of dishes that had been cooking for a long time (cantina style), but nothing that looked good except the green beans. So we asked for a simple souflaki with fried potatoes and some green beans.
After a long time the waiter came by again at our table to tell us we'll have our food soon, but nevertheless we finally got it around 9 pm!
Never waited so long in whatever restaurant! (Had a hard time dissuading my wife from leaving the restaurant and go to another next door)
Happy to finally be able to eat something, but then so disappointed.
Beans and potatoes were cold, potatoes hardly fried and the souflaki was somewhere between cold and a little bit warm!
When finished, the waiter asked if it had been good...
No, told him what is was about.
When finally getting the bill with some home-made chocolate cake we didn't eat the cake because not keen on that after dinner.
To pay the bill the owner came to us and first asked, as a reproach, if we didn't like her cake. I told her it was a matter of taste. Then she asked why we weren't happy about the food, again as a reproach. Explained again the food was cold. Got a very angry look from her, felt like a liar, no excuses or what so ever.
Paid and left. Not ready to come back to this place!!

Bulgarian (!) Ivanka immediately invited us to her kitchen and helped us to choose from her lovely dishes. Extraordinary experience.
