We've become regulars at Nikos on our Easter walking holidays in southern Crete because they're alway open, there's a warm welcome from the son, Jorgos, and the food and their local wine is delicious. A lot of tourists don't drink or ask for the local, wine which is served straight from a large wooden barrel, Amber coloured, strong and tastes a bit like sherry but *it goes with the food*. So persevere. No chemicals. No sore head for your ten mile hike the next day. We've had great veg, salad, fish, lamb, rabbit - ask Jorgos what's fresh & in season and go for it.

We visited Nikos at the beginning of the tourist season and we were surprised by the many choices available so early in the season. We ordered non-meat dishes because of Lent and we were very pleased with the Sfakia pies, the vegetarian dishes and the seafood. We also had a couple of challenging dishes like xoxlious (snails) and squid cooked in its own ink and they also were superb. This family owned and operated restaurant will give you honest advice on what to eat and how much to order. Overall, a wonderful experience capped with exceptionally smooth complimentary raki at the end. The cost approached the high end of the reasonable range but it was well worth it.

We had dinner at this cosy fish tavern in Chora Sfakion, attracted by the variety of dishes, as publicized on the panels in the front of the restaurant. The meals were tasty (although the lamb was a bit tough). More than all, we enjoyed the service of the two waiters (sons of the restaurant owner) who were eager to give advice on the particularities of the different dishes. Fruits and raki were offered.

How do I know? Check out their eyes! (er, if you can do it without seeming odd...) True Sfakiot's have blue eyes!

If you are arriving in Sfakia from the main road the Taverna Nikos is the first place you come to once you descend the hill into the village - it is sitting there just on your right. The taverna itself sits on both sides of a very small road that runs alongside the seafront so you can choose which side you want to sit with both having delightful sea views.

We went out of season (early January) and were the only ones there yet the menu was full with the usual Greek taverna fare albeit with a traditional Sfakian twist (the cheese pies with honey are delicious!)
My wife had a delicious fish stew while I had the bacon wrapped shrimp souvlaki as did my son. Some free garlic bread was given to us at the start.

They were friendly and everything was genuinely delicious. With the addition of two beers and one glass of wine the bill came to 45 Euros.

try a yogurt with a honey for a breakfast. Very fresh and tasty. But be aware of portion size - really big portions.
