Atalia is easy to find and right off the motorway near Irun northern Spain - great for journeys north or south UK/Spain. Friendly English speaking reception and communication in English beforehand by email about our dog. Pet friendly, superbly clean and a great room with balconies. Nearby shopping area doesn't intrude at all and is extremely useful for stocking up. McDonalds is nearby and handy if hotel restaurant is closed (as it was when it was we visited: open only Friday and Saturday at time of our visit). Value for money, clean and simply furnished at the start of the Pyrenees. Enjoy being in Spain and forget the blandness of chain-hotels at Atalia.

We stayed one night on our way from the Costa del Sol to the UK. The hotel was two minutes from the AP8. It is situated next to a shopping centre which doesn't sound nice but was actually very convenient. The fuel there was the cheapest we had seen. When we returned, after eating out, there was a roaring log fire in the foyer, flanked by comfy leather sofas. The bedroom was very spacious as was the bathroom - both were very modern. The beds were comfortable and the bedlinen was high quality. There was a good selection of toiletries in the bathroom so no need to unpack our own. Everything was spotlessly clean. We didn't have breakfast but it was no trouble to pop downstairs in the morning for coffee which we took back to our room. The members of staff whom we met were exceptionally nice. In the past we have crossed the border into France and stayed at a budget chain hotel in Bayonne. Never again! Cheaper and far nicer in Spain.

Very handy for the motorway just over the Spanish border. Lovely rooms, large quiet and well furnished. Really pleasant and helpful staff. Letdown by uninterested reception, no coffee/tea facilities in rooms very limited bar partially manned by the receptionist, dinner not served before 8:30 and not excellent food (although my wife liked her duck)...McDonald's just across the back would have been a better option and I hate McDonald's. Breakfast in the hotel was good....will stay again but not eat there and will take a kettle, cups and tea/coffee

We stayed at Hotel Atalaia twice on our way to and from southern Spain. If you're driving and unfamiliar with the area it's easy to miss the turn off. The reception area and rooms were faultless. Clean, attractive and comfortable bed and wonderful shower facilities. However the restaurant staff couldn't speak or understand English and the dinner menu was only in French or Spanish, so we had to guess what the food choices were. The first meal we had was ok but the second meal was horrible! Meat was barely cooked and the token side vegetables were overcooked. We had trouble communicating with the waitstaff so ended up leaving the restaurant (the food was inedible) and getting some fruit from our car to eat. Breakfast however was a good selection of cereals, fruit, bread, ham, juices, tea and coffee. Reception staff were disinterested in our complaint about the dinner menu, with no apology or explanation.

Room Tip: Choose a room overlooking the courtyard. Very quiet and all rooms are large.
