We were lucky enough to get a very last minute booking at the National in one of their ocean view suites for a quick couples getaway. It's a wonderful place to stay, particularly if you are facing the water and don't mind a little dated quirkiness.
Guests should know that there is no air conditioning or lifts, the latter of which could be a bit of a problem particularly if you are staying on the third floor. Air conditioning was supplied naturally via open windows and the fresh ocean breeze although I could see this being a concern for hot summer nights.
The hotel itself is dated yes, but we loved its historic charm and weren't put off by any lack of amenities although I suspect that a longer stay, or a stay with kids might have amplified any shortcomings.
There is a stone patio at the back of the hotel where fire pits are lit at night for cozy beverage consumption and marshmallow roasting. It's wonderful place to meet some fellow travelers; in our case, we enjoyed stories from couples who had been traveling to Block for years.
The bar is wonderful but most memorable was the breakfast on the front patio in the early morning sun. The views are breathtaking and the food is quite enjoyable.
We look forward to another visit to the National in the near future. More
