Berneray Cottage has everything that you could possibly need for a comfortable stay and much more besides. There is a generosity and kindness that can be felt in the welcome that you receive and in all the small touches that are there to make you feel valued. There is none of the tedious penny-pinching that I have noted elsewhere. Leverburgh is a very good place to be based. Harris and Lewis are open to you by car and most of the other islands can be reached by using the nearby ferry. Barra, however, is not possible in a day trip. Be prepared to travel quite long distances on the empty but mostly single tracked roads. If you like to walk along deserted beaches and explore empty mountain paths the Isle of Harris and Leverburgh are for you.
This cottage is in an excellent position and is exceptionally well appointed. Everything about the décor and facilities has been fully thought through and all the facilities are of a very high standard. The owners were very, very welcoming and travel from Stornoway to meet their guests.
Best cottage - value; location and facility we've stayed in. Simple as that.
Location near Leverburgh is excellent. About 1.5 miles to the pier - close enough for a nice wander to the Anchorage Pub/Restaurant. It is also perfectly located for the stunning nearby Harris beaches; a few other eating options/cafes; and for the Kilda Cruises trips that deliver what their name suggests.
The owners of this cottage clearly take a very personal interest in presenting the property to a very high standard. The furnishings are top notch. The Kitchen equipped to a very high level. The bathroom modern and absolutely adequate. Towels and bedding new and high quality.
Everything really was what we could have wanted. Even Freesat TV and decent Broadband....didn't expect that!
There's a little breakfasting porch that captures the sun - lovely. The living room is cosy. The two double bedrooms are a good size and have excellent storage and new furniture. We were very comfortable!
There's a village shop half a mile away or so - but remember nothing is open on a Sunday. (We typically stock up in the Coop in Stornoway; and of course pick up a Macleod's blackpudding).
Views over the lochans to the harbour are lovely. The garden is typical - a wee bit bleak if its raining then gorgeous in the sunshine - and lots of local birds in the garden.
The bottle of Prosecco and the home made tablet was a great touch.
The drive to the cottage from Stornoway I think took around 1hr 30mins/45mins. Difficult to say as it would depend so much on how busy the single-track roads are...and how often you stop for the magical views of the beaches.
We will be back for a return visit.
First class in every respect, from the comfort, to all mod cons, to the friendly welcome and hospitality, to the wonderful location on this very special island. It was our first visit to the Hebrides and we fell in love with Harris and it was a delight to return to this home from home each night! Beautiful welcoming touches ... friendly and helpful neighbours .... this was probably the best self-catering accomodation we have had anywhere (and we have travelled extensively!). Thank you Marion and Jack for helping to make this holiday unforgettable!
