Owner description: Birr Castle Gardens and Science Centre A Demesne of Discovery open daily from 9.00 until 18.00. The Award Winning Gardens of Birr Castle and the newly revamped Science Centre are rich in flowers, rare trees, extraordinary feats of science and engineering and wonderful wildlife. The Parsons family invite you to explore one of the most extraordinary places in Ireland. Created over generations it is an environmental and scientific time capsule. Treehouse Adventure Area This adventure area inside the Garden houses Ireland’s largest treehouse as well as picnic areas, a bouncy pillow, sand pits and dens. Great Telescope This, the largest telescope in the world for over 70 years, was constructed in the 1840s by the Third Earl of Rosse. With it he discovered the spiral nature of certain nebulae – leading to their identification as galaxies.

The grounds of Birr castle are extensive with river and lake areas to walk. You can easily spend a peaceful couple of hours here strolling through the trees and shrubs. The museum which details the various scientific and other aspects of the demense - such as its giant telescope - is very interesting. Unfortunately you can't visit the Castle itself which makes the entrance fee a bit on the high side.

The ultimate relaxation experience.... we walked and talked, admiring & adoring nature's understated beauty all over the Castle grounds, for hours - and never noticed the rain. Says everything really! Then the science museum proved to be a bonus - an imaginative, creative and informative display, to round off our thoroughly enjoyable visit. Magnificent value!

This was a spontaneous visit as we drove through Birr. We had my mother with us and she really enjoyed the walk and the history. Well worth a visit for any type of group of any age.

Extract - "In the early 1840’s, the Third Earl of Rosse designed and built the largest telescope in the world. With this telescope, he discovered the spiral nature of some of the galaxies, and from 1845-1914, anyone wishing to witness this phenomenon had to come to Birr. And they came, in their hundreds, from across Europe and beyond, to observe the stars with Lord Rosse or simply to marvel at this feat of engineering in the middle of Ireland"

We were visiting our daughter in Ireland so went to Birr Castle Desmesne for the day. This is not our first visit, however over the last 15 years or so the gardens have seen wonderful improvements. More of the gardens are now open with spectacular walks following the River Camcor and the lake round to the play area. There is a fabulous fairy castle for the children to play in. The wonderful telescope is worth seeing. We had a lovely lunch in the courtyard restaurant and the weather was fine enough to sit outside.
