The Award Winning Gardens of Birr Castle and the newly revamped Science Centre are rich in flowers, rare trees, extraordinary feats of science and engineering and wonderful wildlife. The Parsons family invite you to explore one of the most extraordinary places in Ireland. Created over generations it is an environmental and scientific time capsule. Treehouse Adventure Area This adventure area inside the Garden houses Ireland’s largest treehouse as well as picnic areas, a bouncy pillow, sand pits and dens. Great Telescope This, the largest telescope in the world for over 70 years, was constructed in the 1840s by the Third Earl of Rosse. With it he discovered the spiral nature of certain nebulae – leading to their identification as galaxies.

We were visiting our daughter in Ireland so went to Birr Castle Desmesne for the day. This is not our first visit, however over the last 15 years or so the gardens have seen wonderful improvements. More of the gardens are now open with spectacular walks following the River Camcor and the lake round to the play area. There is a fabulous fairy castle for the children to play in. The wonderful telescope is worth seeing. We had a lovely lunch in the courtyard restaurant and the weather was fine enough to sit outside.

While you cannot visit the castle itself since it is inhabited, the grounds are wonderful. The giant telescope has been restored and is worth the walk. We missed the wildflower fields since it was November, the guides said they are spectacular and with a trip back during the summer. So glad we made the time to visit.

We happily spent 3 hrs here on a stunning Autumn Sunday, strolling through the woods, taking in the breath taking scenery. The castle itself is impressive to look at however you cannot explore the inside but I think the grounds were treasure enough. Fantastic areas along the paths to have a picnic and at the end there is also a great play area for small and big kids. Our almost two year old loved the hobbit house, sand play and the bouncy pillow. Will definitely be recommending to others.

We have been to Birr Demesne several times but for this review our last visit was deliberate and with the Grandkids.
Entrance through the main building which houses the museum has you straight into the children's area with the Treehouse (Disney castle style) and other more regular kids playground stuff that kept the youngsters and not so youngsters occupied for about an hour.

Trying to navigate the grounds when the kids have the maps could have been difficult, there are 2 main colour coded walks but several paths so wandering in circles could easily have happened were we not old hands.

Clearly October isn't the best time for flora but the colours of the remaining leaves was a bit special. There were a few trees downed or damaged by the storms and ground staff were busy tidying up. The walking the grounds part added another hour before returning to the entrance building.

The museum is interesting on a number of scientific levels going beyond astronomy and the telescope, chemistry and power generation were other features based and developed from Birr.

Then the Cafe, lots of choice, good food at fair prices. October might be the wrong time but if visiting in Summer the Ice Cream is Good with a capital G.

Visit was 2 1/2 hours. We knew the castle wasn't open although it is on certain dates through the year (check ahead) Pricing is to be fair a bit higher than I would like for parkland gardens but visiting with the family it was well worth the expense.

Great day out.. so much history...Ireland's biggest tree house..we climbed it twice!!... yep... twice!! The tallest box hedges in Guinness world records and the largest telescope in Ireland which was the biggest in world for 70 years! Amazing history.
The Halloween "death party " for the 3rd Earl of Rosse was V v v scary but we'll done. I was more afraid than my son!
