This is a must for visitors. I happen to love history, and these town walls are from the twelfth century! In boom times, these walls served a security purpose, but they also provided a means of collecting taxes - on the goods that passed through the wall. But the real reason to make it a priority are .... the views! The walls are high up on the hillside, and you can see why this was one of the great Irish ports going back centuries. You can see the harbor, and the river and the town from this vista point. The town itself is busy and lined with stores on both sides of Main Street, so you will have no idea of the grandeur unless you get up higher. There is parking above the walls, so make the climb in a car if you can. There are repairs going on - but be clever and you can find the parking lot. After the walls, head for the Heritage Visitor's Center on the harbor. Then walk through town from there.
It is a bit of a hike to get up to the walls (especially on a hot day!), but well worth it. The views are great, and it is fascinating to see the old city walls. At one point, you can walk on top of the walls themselves.
our experience in April recently, we went to visit here and really lovely town is, not much shopping but fanastic beachfront is peaceful and we took uphill to went to the frontier walls but were disappointed cos we found out we cannot access to the walls of Youghal due repairs. also there is quite lot of pubs and resturtants. . very good choices!
These amazing walls are still standing after all this time. Following the heritage trail we accessed the walls via the Raleigh Quarter. From Drews tower there are excellent photos to be had. You can walk through to the outside of the city walls via sally port and appreciate the size of the walls from the other side.
Walking the medieval walls of Youghal not only gives you amazing vistas of the town, the Blackwater River and the Atlantic, but it sends you back in time. As you stroll the walls, you can't help but imagine guards and lookouts, pacing and watching to protect Youghal from maritime invasions....very cool, indeed.
Its a place in history, not a lot of changes over the years, still old world in places. Footpaths narrow make it difficult in places for those with disabilities. Also has a nice seafront with plenty of seats.
