“Lovely rooms - staff very friendly”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 May 2011

We stayed in Becketts for a weekend in May 2011.

I think Becketts is best described as a very successful restaurant that has nice bedrooms available, rather than a Hotel/Inn.

The room we stayed in was huge, very spacious.
The room is decorated in a gorgeous “opulent” style, but modern and spotlessly clean.
Lovely sitting area and had three large windows in the room, double aspect.

We found the room a little noisy. The windows although they seemed double-glazed didn’t block out the noise of the traffic, we thought the windows were open, but they were closed.

For the size of the room, the bed size was just a normal double bed that you would have at home in your own house, deducted a star for that!!

The room had an ensuite, but I was surprised that it was so small, just a shower, toilet and small sink. I was expecting a large bathroom, given the astronomical size of bedroom, not really bothered by that, just an observation.
Plenty of lovely toiletries and clean fluffy towels.

There were tea and coffee making facilities in the room with complimentary chocolates, but no teaspoons or stirrers on the tray!!

We ate in the restaurant and the food really is superb.
The staff are all very nice and chatty and couldn’t be more helpful. I was annoyed to see a mandatory service charge of 12.5% applied to the bill, although there was only two of us. We asked the waitress do they receive the service charge and she told us they don’t receive it. We asked for the charge to be removed as we weren’t paying it. After some tooing and froing the charge was eventually removed.

The bar is part of the restaurant really. There’s about 6/7 bar stools available at the counter and looks out over part of the restaurant. There’s a separate lovely little relaxing/coffee area off the restaurant, ideal for reading the papers and chilling.

Breakfast was fine.
Only continental offered but it was good, all freshly prepared.
Fresh fruit, breads, smoked salmon, cereals, yoghurts, tea/coffee and toast.
Service was quick and efficient, again served by very friendly waitresses.

Overall, I’d have no hesitation in recommending Becketts.

Room Tip: request large room at time of booking

Well, its an old building converted into small hotel, the rooms are ok, clean, but our rooms were at top of building, two sets of steep stairs, not for anyone with mobility or respiratory problems, the corridors were stifflingly hot but the bedrooms were not, mine had a musty smell. When we checked in receptionist was functional, not welcoming, handed our keys, given our room numbers and pointed to the stairs, end of conversation..no hello etc. Person with me was obviously elderly but no concern as to how she was to climb the stairs when allocating room. We appeared to be the only people staying that night which gave the place an erie feel. The breakfast was continental only, couldnt eat the croissant, hard in the middle, settled for toast and tea. Didnt feel very welcomed or valued as customers, staff, all of whom seemed to be double jobing( serving breakfast, being a receptionsit) appeared busy and frazzled, and not in the humour to actually have a conversation with their guests despite the fact that there didnt appear to be anyone there other than us. Could hear traffic from motorway, glad I was not stayng there alone, would have been an isolating exeperience. Happy to leave next day, wouldnt have stayed a second night. Didnt eat in restaurant but I understand they have a good menu

I've just spent a couple of nights at Beckett's while on business at a nearby company. I booked it on the basis that it was close and reasonably well-priced, but didn't have particularly high expectations of the hotel.

I was very pleasantly surprised by what I found. Becketts is a small hotel (only 10 rooms across two floors) with a large and deservedly popular restaurant.

The hotel itself is just outside Leixlip (about 10 miles from Dublin), in an elegant 18th century house where Samuel Beckett's mother was born.

The rooms are smallish, but nicely furnished. Bathrooms are tiny, with room only for a shower rather than a bathtub, but furnishings generally are modern and classy with a large double bed even in the 'single' rooms.

What really makes Beckett's is the staff. The front-of-house team led by Michelle were all friendly, approachable and helpful, creating a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere that was just right after a hard day's work.

The restaurant is very popular - packed every night even midweek - and deservedly so. It's not cheap but uses excellent local produce that's perfectly cooked and well-presented - and portions are generous to a fault. I had some of the best roast duck I've ever tasted, with spectacularly rich sauce and stuffing. Well worth booking a table - it seems to attract diners from far afield, many of whom are celebrating special occasions. The bar serves the expected fine pint of Guinness at sensible pub prices and has a good selection of Irish whiskeys.

Beckett's probably won't appeal if you want slick, faceless chain hotel "luxury" and a room you can lose yourself in. But if you want a genuine Irish welcome, relaxed and friendly atmosphere, superb food and a comfortable, well-designed, elegant place to stay, in an unusual building, you can't go far wrong. It reminds me of some of the comparatively modest hotels in the backwaters of France and Germany that are attached to truly remarkable restaurants - absolutely unpretentious and confident in its strengths. A very welcome find and somewhere I'd definitely return to for business or pleasure trips.

  • Liked — Superb food, brilliant welcome from front of house staff
  • Disliked — Tiny bathrooms
