“an irish gem”
Reviewed 7 October 2015 for a stay in June 2015

I love Raheen Cottage. I have stayed there many times over the years and it has become a second home to me. The owners have modernised the old stone cottage so that it is now a warm comfortable place to stay, but has lost none of the charm of an Irish cottage in a truly magnificent setting. The view is stunning and never the same from one hour to the next and the sunsets are unbelievable
There is so much to do in the area. I like to fish in beautiful Lake Currane for salmon and sea trout and even when the fishing is slow there is nothing better than to be out on the lake in a boat surrounded by mountains and with Raheen a comforting sight on the hillside.

We like to walk the nearby beaches . There are several which must be among the most perfect in Europe . There are two golf courses , one of the world famous, and several excellent sea food pubs. The locals are friendly and make us feel welcome in nearby Waterville

Raheen Cottage is addictive to me and I cant wait to return

“One of the most beautiful places on earth”

I've been here several times with friends and family. Each time, the 'wow' moment from my travelling companions when they arrive for the first time pretty much sums up Raheen.

During my most recent stay, I'd sent some images of Raheen to my friends to show them what to expect but upon arrival, I'd apparently massively undersold the place.

The spectacular sunshine helped but the location is stunning whatever the weather.

Be prepared, Raheen is remote. It's a 10 minute drive to Waterville which makes it isolated but not completely out of touch. There is zero light pollution so it get very dark and when the wind picks up, you're reminded of the exposed location. But this is irrelevant as inside it's warm, comfortable and homely.

We spent a lot of our time in the kitchen, cooking on the brilliant Range. I suppose a microwave in the utility room wouldn't do any harm for convenience.

We had a bluetooth speaker (which we left behind as a donation) which was useful to stream our music and podcasts as we sat around the kitchen table. For bigger groups, the larger dining room is ideal.

Most of the sofas and bedding are feather based which gives me a bit of a reaction but nothing major. Worth noting if you are particularly sensitive to those allergies. Plus, it does get a bit dusty in the house in some of the lesser used areas.

Folk who need to be connected to the outside world can do so with super strong Wi-Fi and 4G which is ironically faster than what in most places in and around London. This enables people to escape to the wilderness but with ability to not curtail their stay due to taking too much time away from work.

Raheen is ideal for a quiet couples retreat or a small group holiday. We play golf at the fantastic courses County Kerry has to offer but it will appeal to those who like walking and fishing too.

Not much can compare to sitting out on the rock in the morning drinking in the view of the loch, and if you're lucky, seeing the sunrise over the mountain to your right.

We cant' wait to go back.

“Exceptional House but ...”
Reviewed 13 September 2014 for a stay in August 2014

Actually we would rate the house overall as good. To put the good things first: The house is set all by it self in a stunning and overwhelming location. Still it can be fairly easily reached (don´t bring a sports-car though as the last bit of the drive is steep gravel). Waterville is just a short drive away. The house is large and has all the comfort you can ask for. Altogether it is a really nice property.

The not so good things mainly regard the housekeeping. The whole place would have to get ship-shaped again. There were lots of dust and cobwebs in the windowsills, at the ceilings and in all the corners. The kitchen had a grease film on many things and was not really all clean.
The house has some nice and antique furniture but also a lot of rather worn stuff and altogether just too many things in the windowsills and corners. It feels a bit like someones attic with all the stuff put there that was in the way somewhere else. The furniture that is worn should be disposed of. No one likes dusty paper lampshades anymore. Futon mattresses have a limited life expectancy. Old pinewood sofas are just ugly and old radios, TV and stereos are just out. A holiday home that you rent out is not a storage place for worn furniture and old electronics. Sadly the Fireplace does not work!

A set of new mattresses, a new stereo with iPod dock for downstairs, a few new lampshades, fixing the fireplace and a lot of the other stuff just thrown out and a good cleaning and this house would just be perfect.

It was sad to see a good part of the great potential of this house being wasted by the way it is kept right now.

“Peaceful and Beautiful”
Reviewed 5 June 2013 for a stay in May 2013

This is a beautiful country cottage that has been lovingly remodeled and brought up-to-date. It's about 4.5km off the Ring of Kerry in a hard-to-describe-how-beautiful location. Great views of the lake, mountains, and sunsets. Lots of places to hike or walk. It's extremely private and peaceful, and any issues we had were promptly addressed. As a plus, it has very good internet access.

The only nit-pick is that it does not have a microwave, which would be very nice to have when vacationing.

We rented through shamrockcottages, and they set up everything very nicely.
