Overpriced, staff lack training, rooms in need of upgrade and the leisure centre is in bad need of updating and cleaning

2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 6 Apr 2024via mobile
Where to start …no point being a member as it means nothing - went to check in where phones kept ringing very annoying when trying to talk - asked was it a double & single bed as I had requested told only 2 single beds ..asked what cost was for upgraded room which had double & single bed couldn’t give an answer - then told could push beds together to make a double- why when I’m travelling with a pre-teen boy! was using a voucher for partial payment and staff member didn’t know what to do - greeting poor considering first time travelling here! Leisure centre was actually disgusting-changing area filthy and obvious signs children had gone to toilet on ground-was talking with a lady there & she had informed staff of the mess of the place & no one went in to clean it - we were there over an hour and when returned still in same mess as when left it!! Doors missing off lockers …ones with a lock didn’t even work..has huge potential but they don’t seem to care. Room was small - bathroom had bits of tile missing, mould in bath area - toilet hadn’t been cleaned properly before us.
Mattress was quite poor - could even feel the springs.
Bar food while nice - staff not at all trained in customer service- took ages to order and it wasn’t even that busy - no coordination, had to ask for cutlery & order our drinks from bar ourselves.
Breakfast was grand nothing to write home about for a 4 star hotel- my son had to ask 2 staff members to help with pancake machine and neither acknowledged him.
In room - my son was sitting at desk playing chess when back part came down on his legs - it wasn’t even screwed in or secured- resulting in a bruise on each leg.
Tv has about 4 channels - very poor for families.
At 9am first morning staff knocked on door and asked if we needed towels - why wake patrons at this time - we left room after 11 came back at 6.30pm and beds hadn’t been made up or room cleaned.
I was so looking forward to this stay and based it off reviews of the hotel but in my opinion It’s a shambles of a place and couldn’t justify spending money there again - we have stayed in Radisson hotels elsewhere and definitely of better quality and service than Athlone.

Room Tip: Parking is a disaster - find a spot if you can and remain there until leaving Better places to...

We had a lovely room overlooking the river where you could watch the boats go past from your bed. The room was clean and had everything you needed. I would have wished there were more gluten free options at breakfast, other than that it was great.

I arrived at the hotel to head to see Nathan Carter, first of all I didn’t even get into the hotel as the car park was full, I paid €7.70 for parking and it was all full. The staff member said that the car park was full and if we seen a parking space we were lucky. That is absolutely disgusting that they are taking money off people for parking when they know the capacity of the car park. I then drove around athlone for 2 hours looking for a parking space and I didn’t make the show. The parking situation needs to change it is a bloody joke 😡

Our concierges (Joy and Giovanni) were amazingly helpful and friendly (and even suggested dishes to try, and they were absolutely right). The food was wonderful, and the view of the River Shannon was beautiful and the room was huge.

When we arrived we had been upgraded without us knowing (thank you Joy) and we went from a Standard Room to a Junior Suite (my first time being upgraded, and was made even more special as we never asked for it, so was a very nice surprise).

The room as clean and tidy, it was also warm and well laid out. The Breakfast staff were also very helpful and very friendly.

We ordered Room service, and it arrived fairly quickly (especially since they were really busy at the time), and the food was absolutely incredible.

The only bad part of the whole experience was the next morning we had asked if we could get some directions to a local shop to buy some milk, and one of the morning Concierges convinced us that she would send someone up with some milk to save us going for a walk (I was happy to go out and buy some, but she was insistent). The milk never arrived, and we ended up having to leave and buy some anyway. They were incredibly busy, so I think some wires may have been crossed.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking to stay in Athlone... just avoid the R Roads in Ireland, they are tiny, so use the Main Roads into and out of Athlone. But, if you can, try and get a room with a view over the River, it is beautiful.

Room tip: Grab your breakfast as early as you can, it get SUPER busy. Try the dinners, and get a River View if you can

Definitely not like the photos on their website. The whole hotel is in need of serious refurbishment, inside and out. The decor looks like tattered 1980s. My room had a lovely view of the car park and a telecommunications tower. My colleague, who paid the same as me, was given a business class room with a view of the river, Nespresso machine, etc. Location is great as it's right in the centre. Traffic noise was an issue, but it calmed down after 11pm so I slept fine. Breakfast was adequate, but I've had better in 3* hotels. Staff were friendly and helpful. Room was clean, just the usual mouldy grout in the bathroom. The facilities for our training course were terrible, with a lot of noise from the service area and really awful sandwiches for lunch. In general, I expected better from the Radisson brand.

We arrived on the 4th of March and left on the 6th . I have to say the staff where so kind and helpful. The food was second to none we dined in the bar and it was lovely. Our room was clean and bright. There was a small problem in the bathroom the door stopper was right infront of the toilet I felt it was a bit of a hazard as I kicked it by accident. Other then that our experience was absolutely fab and I would definitely use yer hotel again
