We visited the pub in May 2019; sorry for delayed review. The town of Athlone is worth a quick walk-about for the walls, church and old buildings.

Sean's is supposed to be the oldest pub in the world or at least in Ireland dating back to 900 AD according to the Guinness book of records. It was originally known as Luan's Inn. It is small, dark, low ceitlinged and cozy, and could easily become crowded. We visited as part of a small tour group (8 people) and enjoyed a bit of history provided by I think the owner, which was interesting plus one free drink (Irish coffee). Bought a T-shirt (if you do, get the next size up from your regular size) and a separate shot of Sean's Whisky which is distilled by the pub.

If you believe the story, the first whisky ever was distilled in a nearby monastery, and the distiller uses a recipe as close as possible to the original monk's recipe. This whisky is surprisingly mellow and easy to drink. If they sold it on the west coast of Canada, I'd would definitely purchase.

Sean's is definitely worth a quick visit for the stories and a drink.

I Have visited this bar 2 or 3 times a year for the last 10 years. I really enjoy their great Guinness and the historic aspect of the bar.
But it ends there. Marauding gang's must be rampaging though Athlone still. The Barman / Security/ Bouncer/ Insurance risk assessor/Manager (owner? ) Seems to live in fear and maybe with good reason I don't know. Any group of 3 or more men age 21 - 55 they don't know, don't get in or if they do don't get to stay long " see the numerous reviews on TripAdvisor and Google " never mind a stag party which I can understand! To much drinking and very little sense. But a short skirt and a pretty girl no problem. As long as its not a hen party but they only get turned away sometimes!!! And yes we all know "the owners have the right to refuse admission " but maybe managing this pub is more difficult than an emergency room on a Saturday night in a full moon during the Halloween bank holiday weekend? Or maybe this bar has be sacked by the Vikings recently. Or maybe it's time for a Change?

Friendly, quick, service. Friendly staff. Atmosphere was fabulous.
Ryan served us for the night. Made my friend feel she stood a chance with him while she drunkenly talked about her life. He listened intently. Patience of a Saint.
5 stars for Ryan

Sexist!!!!!! Rejected a Stag party but 5 mins later they accepted a Hen party. Staff were very rude and asked us to leave as there was more than 6 of us but gladly accepted a Hen party of 15+. Tourists stay away
