Viking Mike's boat picked us up at the Hodson Bay and took us into Athlone and back. Mike gave a brilliant commentary on the journey all about the Vikings and the kind of wildlife that can be seen on the river, he was fantastic. George was also extremely helpful and readily available if we needed any snacks or drinks. The trip took approx 90 minutes return but you don't have to return straight away you can get off in the town and get back on at the next sailing. We were guests in the hotel so we got a voucher at reception for half price sailing.

We really enjoyed the trip. Good commentary and we even got free coffee. Plenty of seating. Cheerful crew members. Maybe a little pricey though.

We took the 90 minute boat trip downriver to Clonmacnoise, which Viking Tours runs most days (check their website for the exact schedule). The tour leaves from just below Athlone Castle, and ends in Clonmacnoise. There is an option to head back immediately, without visiting the site. If you decide to roam the site (which you should), there is a free bus back to Athlone about 90 minutes after you arrive.
Calling the ship a replica viking ship is a bit of a stretch, but if you ignore the faux-viking ambience, it is an excellent tour and very good value for the price. The scenery is pastoral, and there is a fair amount of waterbirds to be seen (mostly swans and herons, but you might get lucky and catch other birds). The skipper, Viking Mike, gives a running commentary which is informative without being intrusive.
