Home away from home

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 3 Oct 2016
LOCATION/ACCESS: 2 kms NE of Bantry off N71, west of Cork County, very easy to access if has a car, in a peaceful hideaway place with a superb panoramic view of the Bantry bay.

OWNERS: Life is full of choices and decisions. Sean and Siobhan, both savvy travelers, know exactly what they like for a great hotel and decided to make a comfortable home away from home for travelers. They designed all the details by themselves. We made a wise decision to have a very pleasant stay there for 3 days. Everything is in the details: which not only reflected in the house deco but also their great hospitality. Sean waited for us to check in when we were late. He provided us not only numerous tourist info flyers but also his own personal opinions on where should be the best to see. Sean made a reservation for us for a dinner at an excellent seafood restaurant, the Fish Kitchen in town (hard to find a table, we saw four groups of people were declined during our dinner there). They made all their effort to accommodate guests’ needs even the ones you did not even think about yourself. The most touching was that we left some fruit on the coffee table when we were out for fun. By the time we came back, to our biggest surprise, we got a gift: a small insulated tote with 3 blue ice packes with our fruit wrapped in!

JUNIOR SUITE HERON. It has its own little ‘yard’ w/ a table & 2 chairs. The suite is glass-enclaved with large windows on two sides of the wall for a magnificent Bantry View. A pair of high power binocular is provided for birdwatching. It is tastefully decorated in simple, contemporary and elegant style with light gray color walls and white wood trimmings and furniture. It feels spacious and airy. A long desk provides convenience if you want to work on your computer.

BED: The queen size bed and pillows are very comfortable (neither too hard nor too soft).

BATHROOM: It has a shower unit in gray color tile wall and with a clear glasswall preventing water splashing. The towels are nice. Details: in addition to cotton-q-tips, makeup-removal cotton pad and especially wet wipes are provided (in case you did not pack you own; please use these instead of the white towels). A rack is provided for hanging small items. The bathroom has an eye-level window overlooking the apple trees outside (no one would see your body though). The handheld shower head can be attached to a tall pole and the height is adjustable (for flexibility). The knobs for adjusting water temperature and volumes, respectively, are the simple but very functioning cross style (vs. those roundish which would be very challenging to turn when your hands are wet and soapy). Robes and slippers are also provided.

BREAKFAST: Included in the room rate. For the BUFFET part, various types of salami, breads, fruit preserves, fresh fruit (apples, oranges, bananas), musli with raspberry/blackberry/blueberry, yogurt, cheese, and drinks (grape juice, orange juice, milk, coffee and tea) are available. Not those yet, there are HOT ITEMS which you can order and Sean will cook for you. The Irish Full breakfast was delicious, which has the brown and white pudding, grilled sausage, scrambled egg (with chives on top), grilled tomatoes and portabella mushroom, and bacon. Other choices include but not limited to smoked salmon, any style of eggs you want. Enjoying your breakfast with a panoramic view of the bay (you can sit on the patio), what a wonderful start of a day. They run their kitchen as a “serious business” by offering full attention to each guest: you would be asked when you want your breakfast to be served. When you show up next morning, your table is ready. They actually went out their way to get us the skim milk next day just because we mentioned the first day. You should know that they purchase the food from local producers.

INTERNET: WiFi available free of charge.

PARKING: Free private parking on site (right outside of our suite)

SPECIAL ATTENTION: This is a non-smoking, no-children, no-pet splotlessly clean property.

We planned to spend one night here but ended up staying three. Sean and Siobhan were most helpful--told us what to see and booked us for wonderful dinners every night. Breakfasts were amazing. Our room was clean, comfortable and had a fabulous view.

This beautiful house is right on the rugged shoreline of West Cork. The decor is calming and very well thought out. Small thoughtful gestures such as the provision of face wipes, slippers and bathrobe, did not go unnoticed!
They like you to check in by 6pm but this wasn't possible for us, so we negotiated a mutually suitable time! This is Sean and Siobhan's home so a little cooperation goes a long way. Sean booked us into the Fish Kitchen which was lovely and suggested Dan Phills a fabulous French restaurant in Ballylicky.

Breakfast was freshly cooked to order with freshly squeezed OJ and a lovely organic granola, fruit and yoghurt concoction.

We would definitely recommend this beautiful retreat that aims high and succeeds!

We stayed here for three nights and really enjoyed the setting and ambiance of this beautiful house. The owners are extremely welcoming and helpful. Doing their upmost for ensure you enjoy your stay with them and your time in Bantry.
While the house is not in Bantry village, it is an easy 20 min walk into this small harbour town, or at low tide you can be a little more adventurous and walk in along the beach - this takes about an hour.
Our room was smallish but very well equipped, with the most beautiful view. The bed was a queen size without a huge amount of space around. We were very comfortable, but perhaps a bigger couple might find it a bit cramped. Would be worth checking this detail before making a booking.
Highly remommended

Room tip: Make sure you get a room big enough for your comfort

We were on a 17 day trip through Ireland, UK and Scotland and stayed at 9 different hotels right from castles to quaint B&B's; boutique hotels to luxurious 5 star hotels.

We found Seafort purely because of the ratings on booking.com and TripAdvisor. Being a newer place we had our doubts because though the ratings were extremely high, the number of reviews was relatively low. We decided to take a chance anyway and it was the best decision we could have made.

When we got there, it was a bit hard to find because the signage on the road is small and you have to drive down a long road and then a driveway to get down to sea level and to the property. The moment we parked and got out of our car we were blown away by the setting. The property is located right on the water in a little cove that comes inland from the Atlantic Ocean. We immediately noticed the modern, tasteful design of the house and the property in general. There were ducks and swans swimming right outside when you stood on the patio.

We went in and met Siobhan, who is one half of the amazing husband wife duo who own and run the place. After staying in hotels for a few days, this was completely different. Siobhan was so warm and welcoming that there was immediately a sense of comfort and it felt more like you were being invited into the warmth and care of someone's home rather than staying in a paid establishment. She offered us tea and coffee and asked us to relax after the long day of driving. We got talking while we relaxed and sipped our tea which was really nice and again made us feel very comfortable and more at home. Then we met Sean, her husband, who again was equally welcoming and warm. We found out that he's the one who cooks the great breakfasts that many reviewers have written about. They spoke to us about our dinner plans, and not only did they recommend a great place for us to go to in town, they made the reservation and Sean even drove us into town to drop us off at the restaurant. He gave us the number of a taxi company to call when we were ready to come back and even gave us a back-up number of another company just in case. He even gave us a card to show the taxi driver so that he could find the place easily.

Now getting to the room. They gave us a choice of two rooms in the category that we had booked. One room was larger and had regular windows overlooking the sea. But given the setting of this property, we both agreed that we wanted the smaller room that juts out closer to the ocean and has a much more panoramic view of the water because of the extremely large windows. The room was very comfortable and one of the main things that really blew us away was the level of detail that Sean and Siobhan had thought of to make their guests comfortable. We even spoke to them about how well appointed the room was and they said through their experiences in corporate life (which they both left to move to Bantry to start a B&B) and the extensive business travel that they did, they really tried to learn from that and then think of every single detail that would help make their guests as comfortable as possible. I think they definitely succeeded in doing that. The room had bottled water, tea, coffee, bathrobes, slippers, a safe, face wipes, ear buds, a hair dryer, heated towel racks, and the list goes on. I think every hotel we stayed in, including the more luxurious and expensive ones, we always found something was missing. It was either the bottled water, or a safe, or ear buds, or a hair dryer. This is the one place on the whole trip that had every single thing that we could have possibly thought of and wanted while travelling.

I also want to mention that everything they provide is of the highest quality with no expense spared, right from the soap in the bathroom to the body wash to even the paper roll.

And finally, the breakfast. Sean's an excellent cook and this was probably the single best breakfast that we had on the trip. Every ingredient that they used was chosen carefully, locally sourced and of the highest quality. The eggs, the tomatoes, the bacon, the pudding, the fresh orange juice and even their granola, yoghurt & fruit creation, they explained to us were all made from ingredients that were locally sourced, fresh and completely organic. I have to say that the scrambled eggs, just because of the quality of the eggs used and the passion with which they do things, were some of the best I have ever had anywhere in the world.

Overall this was one of the most memorable places we stayed in on our trip. It wasn’t just the quality of the place, the room, the setting, the breakfast, etc. but a large part of it was Sean and Siobhan themselves. They are extremely warm and welcoming and do whatever it takes to make sure that you are comfortable and taken care of.

My recommendation is book this place without thinking twice. There is no way you will end up having regrets. It’s as close to perfect as you can get!

You will never tire of the view! The setting of the house just above the high water mark is stunning. The scene changes spectacularly with the tide, the weather and the time of day. You certainly feel you are Far from the Madding crowd!
The rooms are all newly decorated, with very comfortable beds and Eqyptian cotton sheets. There are plenty of nice touches, tea, coffee, water, slippers, bathrobes.

The breakfast was excellent. A big variety, and all cooked fresh to order by Sean, in the kitchen, right next to the dining room ( which overlooks the estuary, complete with swans and sea birds!)

Sean and Siobhain are the perfect hosts--knowledgable and helpful, but not intrusive.

We stayed 2 nights, in the garden view room and we had a really restful and enjoyable stay.

10 out of 10 for Seafort.

PS I love West Cork(see my username!) and this is the best place I have stayed there.

Room tip: All rooms are excellent
