We've seen this place in adverts to visit Ireland but to see it for real is an amazing experience. Of all the sites we visited in Ireland this was our favourite. It is hauntingly beautiful and holds a certain mystery about itself. It is a vast place, windy and sea worn, but extremely photo worthy. While we were there a wedding party had stopped to have pictures taken, and we could just imagine the memories that couple were making. This is an enchanting place, one can imagine faeries at twilight and strange lights in broken windows. Quite the place to let ones imagination fly.

Standing in this old ruin, close your eyes... Tune out all the other tourists and listen. Listen to the crescendo of the waves... Listen to the weeping of the wind as it sweeps through the ruined castle... Listen to the long ago cries of battle...

I took some American visitors to this castle last weekend and it was stunning! I haven't been for a few years, so I'd forgotten just how magnificent it is. Even if you don't pay to go in, it's still worth stopping to take in the "free" section (wonderful views and a great walk down steps to the sea). The real highlight for us though was going into the wee cottage in the car-park and finding a tea-room with a such huge array of home made cakes on display, that even after a full Ulster fry for breakfast, we had to try some! We weren't disappointed and, although we'd only planned to try a spoonful or two as we sat by the open fire, we ended up scoffing the lot, leaving with grins on our faces and incredibly full tummies!!! There was a couple reading the morning papers at a table nearby who were having an early lunch and I have to say the hearty soup and fresh wheaten bread they were having made me promise to return for more of their fare on our next visit (which is next week, in fact!)
While lots of tea-rooms at visitor attractions take advantage of non-returning guests, this place certainly strives to make a great impression on visitors and locals alike with a warm welcome and great hospitality for all who enter.

We arrived to early to go in and do the full tour but we did find a path to walk down and get some amazing views and photos. Stopped further along the road to take additional pics.

You can take photo's of the castle from the outside for free, but pay the few quid entrance charge and take a walk around. This is a must visit on the North Coast.
